Architecture Kitchen Research Project 1.Review this document for examples in kitchen design and kitchen components (fridge, stove, cooktop, wall ovens, dish washer, microwave, countertops, cabinetry, etc.) 2.Create your own PowerPoint slide collection of kitchens you find browsing the web. INCLUDE a text box expressing your thoughts relating the images you find (good, bad, what works, what you like, etc.) 3.Please me the document.

Granite Countertops

Concrete Countertops: Flexible shape / you design the “pan”

Concrete Countertops: rebar embedded in the mix for strength.

Concrete countertop slabs poured in forms

Concrete counters poured in place

Acid stained concrete

Concrete allows for non-typical shapes. Note integrated sink basins and cutting board area / dish drying area (sloped to sink basins).

Concrete- if you can imagine it and build a form…

Concrete with integrated cutting board

Concrete with integrated sink. Note seems- not poured in place.

Concrete “stained” and struck (when green) to look like wood.

Not wood, concrete.

Custom vegetable sink (stainless) with concrete counter cut / poured to match.

Recycled glass mixed in a slurry (fine cement) and poured into any shape.

Glass counters can be translucent and allow for under mount lights.

Corian / solid surface countertops (aka “plastic”)

Appliances: Refrigerators… Have grown significantly in size over the last two decades. Get familiar with current standards / trends.

48” wide unit. Side by style.

Consider matching cabinet fronts on the appliances to simplify the look of a kitchen.

Appliances: Stoves Cook surface on top, ovens below. Also have GROWN significantly in size over the past two decades. 48”, 60”, and 36” models on this page.

Appliances: Cooktops No oven underneath- space for cabinetry. Oven(s) moved to wall location so user doesn’t have to bend… but takes up more space in kitchen

Appliances: Wall Oven Easier to use / less bending but takes up wall space. Singles, doubles, singles tied with microwaves or warming drawers, etc.

Good example of “stacking” vertically orientated appliances together to create a uniform wall. FYI consideration needs to be taken for shielding “hot” appliances from “cold” appliances / i.e. don’t want to force your fridge into overtime parked next to a hot oven running 6 hours with a turkey…

Appliances: Dish washers Can raise off the floor to make easier for operator.

Note corners have been dropped- none of those crazy lazy susan corner units that drive me crazy and waste a lot of space!

No corners again.

Cool lighting (both natural and artificial), functional work areas / counter top spaces, zoned out for different tasks, no corners, clean lines, good vertical stacks. I would like to see the sink flipped so better tie to the cooktop.

Seems like they had to have everything imaginable (except for more space) and crammed it in. Where do you do food prep / what countertops? Island too small- feels like an obstacle. What would it be like to have more than one person prepping/cooking food in this kitchen?

Things to search for on the web: Appliances: Viking, Subzero, Wolf ovens, Miele, Fisher Paykel dishwasher drawers, Abt electronics (look at different kitchen products/manufacturers ), etc. “Subzero kitchen design gallery winners” Corian / solid surface countertops Granite countertops Slate countertops Glass countertops
