The direction of the needle must follow the direction of pattern, and avoid the crossing of the thrum, the needlework should be done naturally like drawing a circle.

Just like dividing bunchy stitches one by one,and tie the knot cheek by jowl. The measure is often used to embroider little flower or leaves.

Let the string step beneath the needle and be tied.Form stitches by certain height and width. This is a practical way of embroidering in daily life and mostly used in making up a buttonhole.

Do it yourself History and development

The Chinese traditional decorative knot is a kind of characteristic folk decoration of handicraft arts.

It appeared in ancient times, developed in Tang and Song dynasty, and was popularized in Ming and Qing dynasty. At the beginning of its appearance, Chinese knots were usually used as buttons or decoration of waistbands and swords. Now Chinese knots has become a type of elegant craft.

It’s very difficult to discover the evolution of the Chinese knots, as there is little written reports remained. However, figures of objects with knots appear in paintings and sculpture that date back to ancient times, which shows the long history of Chinese knots.

In early 20th century, Chinese knot almost lost its value as an art form with the arrival of mass production. It became less popular and nearly disappeared. Fortunately, a few elderly women still remembered how to make the knots, until the 80’s when Chinese knots as an art form became popular again. Back

A knot made of one rope is called a “Basic Knot”. Combine several different basic knots together skillfully and an unique Chinese knot is formed. No matter how big a Chinese knot is, every knot is always made of one single rope, and every knot is of bilateral symmetry.

Every knot has its specific form and meaning by which it is named. Chinese knots usually represent beauty, idea, regards and wishes. For example, “Full of joy”, “Double happiness”, “Happiness & Longevity” are Chinese traditional phrases expressing the warmest wishes.

Here are some examples. The Flower Knot (represent reunion and luck) The Double Happiness Knot (Wish a satisfied marriage)

More Examples The Fish Knot (wish a good income every year) The Luck Knot (Wish happin ess and longevi ty)

In nowadays, Chinese Knot has various products. The two main series are auspicious hanging decoration and knitting clothing adornment. Auspicious hanging includes large tapestry and big room hanging. Knitting clothes adornment includes necklace and decoration on clothes.

These are auspicious hanging, which can be easily found in the room at Chinese traditional festivals
