THE COMPLEX CASTE SYSTEM  ARYANS HAD DIVIDED SOCIETY IN 4 OCCUPATIONAL CLASSES.  NON-ARYANS WERE OUTCASTS – HELD LOWEST JOBS  CASTE LINKED TO HINDU BELIEFS  CASTE INDICATED RELATIONSHIP TO MOKSA  RULES GOVERNED ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE  SYSTEM ENSURED A STABLE SOCIAL ORDER  FLEXIBILITY ALLOWED DIVERSITY WITH HARMONY

KARMA AND DHARMA  KARMA  PERFORM CASTE DUTIES FAILTHFULLY AND NEXT LIFE COULD BE HIGHER CASTE  CASTE DETERMINE BY LAW OF KARMA  DHARMA  FAMILY IS PATRIARCHAL  JOINT/EXTENDED FAMILY  PROPERTY BELONGS TO WHOLE FAMILY  ARRANGING GOOD MARRIAGES WAS FAMILY DUTY

VILLAGE LIFE  VILLAGE IS THE HEART OF LIFE  INCLUDED HOMES MADE OF EARTH OR STONE  FIELDS –GREW WHEAT, RICE, COTTON SUGAR CANE  DIFFERENT CASTES  CROPS DEPENDED ON THE RAINS BROUGHT BY THE MONSOONS  LANDOWNERS RECEIVED SOME OF THE CROP FROM THE FARMERS WHO RENTED THE LAND VILLAGES WERE SELF- SUFFICIENT  LITTLE OUTSIDE INTERFERENCE
