2 WHY MSc(LIM)? “Information only becomes knowledge in the hands of someone who knows what to do with it.” The MSc(LIM) is a new program designed to prepare candidates for professional work in the information sector; the fastest growing area of the economy. It is the only local university with library and information studies programs at the Bachelor and post-graduate levels.

3 Why HKU? HKU, a world-class university is a major regional and international centre for research. Its library system has more than two million volumes, highly sophisticated electronic services and extensive databases for student use.

4 Aims Designed to prepare people to be ‘informed, reflective practitioners’ in the information age develop information leadership capacities that can be used in a wide variety of environments both profit and not-for-profit: traditional library settings, education settings, business settings, and as consultants

5 Who should apply? Everyone who holds a degree and who deals with information and who wants to provide leadership! People who are already engaged in the information professions and who are seeking a postgraduate qualification.

6 What makes the MSc(LIM) so special? First such award offered by a Hong Kong university. A program tailored to the unique needs of Hong Kong. –& relevant to the rest of the world. The MSc(LIM) acts as both a first qualification and as an advanced qualification depending on entry knowledge.

7 Course structure: Students complete 8 modules Each module consists of a minimum of 24 contact hours or equivalent. The MSc(LIM) involves a minimum of 300 hours of prescribed work. * Students are required to complete 8 modules which may comprise the following: 4 cores + 2 specialist modules + 1 elective + independent project 4 cores + 1 specialist module + dissertation (which is equivalent to 3 modules)

8 Course structure: Choosing independent project or dissertation Those who have no background in LIM are encouraged to choose to do an independent project. Those who already hold a LIM qualification are encouraged to consider doing a dissertation.

10 Specialist strands Students are required to take a specialist strand upon enrollment in the programme and to select 1 or 2 module from the list of your chosen specialist strand: Information Management Knowledge Management Librarianship

16 Mode of study The program  extends over one academic year of full-time study, or two, but no more than four consecutive years of part-time study.  has a flexible modular structure allowing students to complete the degree according to their own pace.  is conducted mainly in a face-to-face mode, supplemented by flexible delivery (Moodle).

20 MSc(LIM) – Intake Since the MSc[LIM] program was launched in September 2004, more than 200 people, from a broad range of backgrounds (e.g., teachers, school administrators, librarians and IT officers etc.), have joined the program.

I do enjoy studying the course and I have recommended this course to other school librarians.” “I think that the program is very good in terms of the breadth and depth of the knowledge provided in the field of Library and information management. I have worked in Library for 9 years. I think the knowledge covered in different modules are current and updated such as web 2.0, social bookmarking and library visits analysis. The modules are very practical too!

23 BSc[IM] : Who should apply? Candidates holding a recognized Higher Diploma, Professional Diploma or Associate Degree in any discipline are eligible HKU students may take it as a minor

24 BSc[IM] Programme Structure Candidates are required to complete courses totaling 120 credits in 2 years 9 credits in Language Enhancement courses 96 credits in Core Courses (including 6 credits in Professional Experience and 6 credits in a Project) 12 credits in Common Core Courses 3 credits in Elective
