Project Description “…should contain a well-argued and specific proposal for activities that will, over a 5-year period, build a firm foundation for a lifetime of contributions to research and education…” Having a good research proposal is essential. Needs to be innovative and pushes the frontiers of knowledge Propose research that addresses both near-term and long term impact Start with a restatement of your goals and objectives, clarify them, and provide a plan to accomplish them 15 pages max

Project Description cont’d Restate and provide detail on your intellectual merit and broader impact – Broader impacts needs its own separate section Task statements should detail the tasks needed to accomplish your objectives Results of prior NSF support (if applicable) in both intellectual merit and broader impacts Include details on international/global dimensions (how activities fit in global context, any international engagements) and cross-disciplinary activities (partnerships with industry, national labs, schools, museums but no co-PIs)

Broader Impacts Means to benefit society include: Economic/environment/policy Education and training Providing opportunities for underrepresented groups Improving research and education infrastructure

Education Every project must have an educational component You must integrate your research and educational goals. Research and education activities do not need to be addressed separately. You must be innovative. (not just teach new classes and advising graduate students)Think of 1-2 things that the reviewers won’t see in other proposals. Can be directed at any level.

References Cited & Biographical Sketch of PI Bio sketch- 2 pages maximum Refer to the CAREER RFP and the GPG for Instructions

Random Final Thoughts Pay attention to format requirements Clearly distinguish past work from proposed work. Have a five year project timeline! Show how your project will be evaluated! Determine your research path – your lifelong research goals - and then identify milestones toward your goals.

Your career involves a research path, not a research project.
