1903 Creation of the Department of Statistics (DoS) which was a division within the Customs Department primarily charged to collect and compile foreign trade statistics. 1932: the DoS was affiliated to the Economic Committee which was transformed into the Department of trade and Economics. 1953: the DoS separated from the Department of trade and Economics to become an independent affiliated to the Ministry of Social Affairs Historical background of CBS

The CIS provided an important statistical database, which was help in the provision of information needed by decision makers industrialist,etc. And this done through provision of detailed data about : The size of the industrial sector and its distribution according to the type of industry,classified according to the international standard industrial classification version 3(ISIC3).that is in term of number of industrial establishments and their geographical distribution. Data on production capacity,total output of industrial sector, value added and its contribution in GDP. Data on raw materials (input) used in the various industries,their types and sources (local or imported) Data on fixed asset and its distribution according to the type of industry. The first stage of comprehensive industrial survey was implemented by CBS. In this stage all manufacturing establishments in Sudan were enumerated and registered in order to prepare the comprehensive frame for all industrial establishment existing in Sudan. The enumeration process was also based on some earlier frames together with a number of other sources that include federal ministry of industry,CBS,Khartoum states,union of businessmen and Union of industrial chambers and commerce.
