Various Types of Health Information Systems Health Informatics 489 Spring 2015

Objectives To give a brief overview of the wide range of different information systems in health care.

Core Information Systems in a Health facility Hospital Information System (HIS) Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) Web Portals Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) Radiology information system (RIS)/Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) Other Supportive ISs

Enterprise Resource Planning ERP is a business management information system. It is usually consist of: Human Resources (HR) Information System Finance Information System Supplies Information System Payroll Inventory management Information System Billing system Leon, Alexis. Enterprise resource planning. Tata McGraw-Hill Education, 2008.

Web Portals Internet Portal Healthcare organization internet web site E-Services Intranet Portal It is an internal website can be accessed within the organization domain.

Hospital Information System It is considered as the “core-business” application Patient Administration Systems (PAS) Plus Clinical Records (Electronic Health Record – EHR) Haux, Reinhold. "Health information systems–past, present, future."International journal of medical informatics 75.3 (2006):

Important HIS modules Person Management System (PMS) Patient’s Billing and Account Receivable Health Information Management (HIM) System Clinical Information System (CIS) Laboratory Information System (LIS) Blood Bank Information System (BBIS) Pharmacy Information System (PIS) Radiology Information System (RIS) Real-time locating systems (RTLS) Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) Business Intelligence (BI)

Patient Management System (PMS) Sometimes they call it Patient Administration Systems (PAS) Manage Patient Activities: Appointment/Scheduling Registration Admission Discharge Transfer Management Of The Deceased

Patient’s Billing And Account Receivable Manage Patient Billing And Account Receivable Activities: Bill Generation Bill Management Bill Payment Collection Management Refund Management Account Reconciliation Report Generation

Health Information Management (HIM) System Monitor, Control & Manage Medical Record Office Activities: File Management Medical Report Release of Information Medical coding Quality of EHR

Clinical Information System (CIS) To Carry out The Clinical Activities: Doctor Documentation Nurse Documentation Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) Results viewing

Laboratory Information System (LIS) Receive Orders & Collect Specimens Process Orders Create Testing Work Orders Lab Equipment Interface Actual Testing Generate & Transmit Results Generate Management Results Quality Management

BLOOD BANK INFORMATION SYSTEM (BBIS) Blood Donation Management Blood Procurement Blood Safety Blood & Blood Component Production Blood & Blood Component Storage & Distribution Blood Transfusion Management Quality Management

Pharmacy Information System (PIS) Medication Order Management Clinical Pharmacy Management Manufacturing Inventory Management

Radiology Information System (RIS) Receive Subject and Process Order Exam Management Transcribe, Validate And Distribute Report Support Generation Of Management Report Support Administrative Function

Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) It is a system provides storage, retrieval, management, distribution and presentation of medical images A PACS has four major components: Imaging systems, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed axial tomography (CAT scan) equipment. (we call them modalities) A secure network for distribution and exchange of patient information. Workstations or mobile devices for viewing, processing and interpreting images. Archives for storage and retrieval of images and related documentation and reports.

Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) Clinical Decision Support Systems (CDSS) have been defined broadly as any computer programme which helps health professionals make clinical decisions (Shortliffe, 1990). This is including information resources software.

Real-time locating systems (RTLS) RFID – Radio Frequency ID RFID readers can detect and RFID label from a distance and without human action. Assets can be tracked e.g. Surgical Instruments Blood samples traking New born tracking

Business Intelligence (BI) Dashboards provide a graphical representation of key performance indicators. The aim is to make information more accessible and immediate for busy, senior staff.
