Many companies (not all) are required by law to pay employees extra for working more than 40 hours in one week. Overtime rate When a company pays you overtime, you are being paid extra for working more hours than is legal (or company policy) in one week (usually anything over 40) The over time rate is your hourly rate for those hours only See handout

Hours considered “overtime” may vary by company. Employers also pay extra for working on holidays. Police officers get paid overtime for going to court.
