Time Zones

What does noon mean in terms of what is going on with the Sun as well as what time it is? Noon is exactly half way between sunrise and sunset. It is the time of day where the Sun stops rising and starts setting. This is know as local noon.

Local noon can only happen once along one line of longitude at a time. That means that it must be some other time along every other line of longitude.

One per group. You are in Florida, it is noon. Where is it midnight? Burma, Malaysia or Thailand Where is it 6 am? Samoan Islands Where is it 6 pm? Norway, Italy or Nigeria

Towns used to set their clocks to local noon. If you traveled, you set your watch to agree with the town clock. In the 1880’s people began to take trains and travel fast. This caused problems with schedules. Canadian Sanford Flemming proposed time zones. Everyone in that zone set their clocks to that zone. There are 24 zones, 15 degrees each. Adopted in 1884.

Study the maps in your books. What line does time start at? What time zone are we in? How far is it to the next time zones both East and West. (Estimate) Any weird shaped zones? Isolated tiny islands? Time zones on the ½ hour? Time zone story…. Sooo…..What time was it in Sweden when Feynman was called? 9 hours between Sweden and California….11 am in Sweden.

Thinking in Time, ws 17/21 Answer ALL questions on both sides!
