POWER GENERATION TECHNOLOGIES S.E. ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING (2012 COURSE) UNIT II [C] GAS POWER PLANT

POWER GENERATION Presently, NTPC generates power from Coal and Gas. With an installed capacity of 41,184 MW, NTPC is the largest power generating major in the country. It has also diversified into hydro power, coal mining, power equipment manufacturing, oil & gas exploration, power trading & distribution. With an increasing presence in the power value chain, NTPC is well on its way to becoming an “Integrated Power Major.”

OBJECTIVES The objective of this unit is to impart the knowledge of basic Gas Turbine Cycle to the students. Make the students familiar with the terminologies and specifications of Gas Turbine Power Station.

Methods of Improving Thermal Efficiency

Closed Gas power plant

Combined Steam and Gas Turbine Power Plant Three types : Use of Exhaust Gases of Gas Turbine Power Plant for Heating of Feed Water. Use of Exhaust Gases of Gas Turbine Power Plant as Combustion Air in Steam Boiler. Use of Exhaust Gases from Supercharged Boiler for Expansion in Gas Turbine.

Use of Exhaust Gases of Gas Turbine Power Plant for Heating of Feed Water:

Use of Exhaust Gases of Gas Turbine Power Plant as Combustion Air in Steam Boiler:

Use of Exhaust Gases from Supercharged Boiler for Expansion in Gas Turbine

Advantages of Combined Cycle Power plant: Saving in exhaust heat of the gas turbine and, therefore increases in its heat rate. Reduction of stack emissions. Reduction in space requirement in comparison with conventional generating units of a given capacity. Reduction in requirements of condensing water by 60% as compared to fossil fueled plant of given capacity. Reduction in starting time.

Comparison of Gas Turbine Power Plant with Diesel Power plant: Gas power plant required small site area. Lower cost building. Low initial cost. Better heat rate Less water requirement. Easier maintenance. Reduced attendance charges. Improved reliability.

Comparison of Gas Turbine Power Plant with Diesel Power plant: Less vibration No cycle variation No problem of fuel injection Only Draw back of gas power plant More fuel consumption.
