Why Have Dental Group Practices Continued to Grow in the U Why Have Dental Group Practices Continued to Grow in the U.S in Recent Years? Increase in population Decrease in # of providers Increase in demand Rising cost of education Tightening credit market Increase in US population – now at 304,059,724 July 2008 census bureau Decrease in # of providers – currently only 169K licensed, active practicing dentists in US. According to ADA, nearly 5500 retire each year (baby boomers) and only 4000 new grads each year from the 59 dental schools. And 25% go in to academia or research and not in to practice. Increase in demand - greater efficiencies and infrastructure are required to handle the increasing demand. Cost of education increasing – debt load averages nearly 200K for new grads, lack of practice management in dental school curriculum makes raising and a Tightening credit market makes raising capital more difficult and private practice less likely.
