Date, place of birth Hilaire-Germain-Edgar De Gas was born July 19, He was born in Paris, France where he spent the majority of his life.
Childhood and Family His Father, Auguste, was a Banker from Naples. His mother, Celestine, was a amateur opera singer from new Orleans. Degas’ mother had four other children after him. Their names were Achille, Therese, Marguerite, and Rene. Unfortunately Celestine died a few years after the birth of Rene when Degas was only 13.
Education Degas went to Louis-le-Grand for secondary school. He then got accepted into Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1855 because he always preferred painting over law. After a year at Ecole des Beaux-Arts Degas left to travel, paint, and study art in Italy.
Career He was a very talented Painter and Artist throughout his life. He started by doing portraits for prominent families in 1868 to establish himself as an artist.
Important Facts Degas’ father was a great art lover and encouraged degas’ art. Degas started by coping famous artist’s works, such as Rapheal.
