MATHS INFORMATION EVENING WEDNESDAY 20 TH NOVEMBER 2013

CHANGES TO MATHS: TIMES TABLES AND NUMBER BONDS- REINTRODUCED, HIGHER PROFILE IN SCHOOL. SPEED GRIDS NUMBER FUN. WEEKLY SKILLS TESTS. MYMATHS CALCULATION POLICY HOW YOU CAN HELP

TIMES TABLES AND NUMBER BONDS CHILDREN IN KEY STAGE 1 WILL PROGRESS ON TO TIMES TABLES TESTS WHEN THEY HAVE COMPLETED ALL THEIR NUMBER BONDS TESTS. TESTED AND NEW ONES SET EVERY MONDAY IN KEY STAGE 2. CHILDREN ARE TOLD WHICH TIMES TABLES TO LEARN FOR THE WEEK AND THE EMPHASIS IS ON: RECALLING THE FACTS ( BOTH THE MULTIPLICATION AND DIVISION FACTS), IMPROVING THE SPEED OF RECALL. NEW TESTS INTRODUCED IN SCHOOL. STORIES OF EACH NUMBER STILL REMAIN WHILE CHILDREN LEARN THE FACTS. DEVELOP INTO OLYMPIC TESTS, 118 GRIDS, HUMAN CALCULATOR AND MATHS GENIUS. EACH TEST LASTS 3 MINUTES AND THE EMPHASIS IS ON SPEED. IN KEY STAGE 1 NUMBER BONDS CARDS ARE STILL USED TO HELP CHILDREN AND PARENTS LEARN THE FACTS.

TIMES TABLES AND NUMBER BONDS NUMBER BONDS 1-10 THEN NUMBER BONDS ( STARTING IN YEAR 1) TIMES TABLES 2X TO 12X- BRONZE, SILVER AND GOLD. ( USUALLY FROM YEAR 2 ONWARDS) OLYMPIC TIMES TABLES TEST AND 118 GRIDS ( FROM YEAR 3 ONWARDS) HUMAN CALCULATOR TESTS MATHS GENIUS FROM THE TIMES TABLES TESTS ONWARDS CHILDREN ONLY HAVE 3 MINUTES TO COMPLETE EACH TEST.

SPEED GRIDS ALONGSIDE TIMES TABLES AND NUMBER BONDS WE NEED TO KEEP REINFORCING BASIC SKILLS. ADDITION AND DIFFERENCE GRIDS EXTREME GRIDS RECALL OF KEY FACTS REPETITIVE TO KEEP THE SKILLS SHARP.

NUMBER FUN NUMBER FUN WAS INTRODUCED AT THE END OF LAST YEAR. THE IDEA BEHIND NUMBER FUN IS TO HELP CHILDREN LEARN NEW FACTS OR REINFORCE KNOWLEDGE THROUGH SONGS AND MOVEMENT. DAVE GODFREY CAME IN AND RAN WORKSHOPS WITH EACH CLASS AS WELL AS A WORKSHOP FOR PARENTS. NUMBER FUN IS USED THROUGH OUT THE DAY- NOT JUST IN MATHS BUT CAN BE USED AS A BRAIN BREAK, A TIDY UP SONG. ORIGINAL SONGS AND BACKING TRACKS ARE USED TO ENSURE THE SONGS ARE ADAPTABLE FOR EACH CLASS.

WEEKLY SKILLS INTRODUCED THIS HALF TERM. SEPARATE BOOK TO EVERYDAY MATHS BOOK. EACH QUIZ IS AIMED AT A SPECIFIC LEVEL. EG, LEVEL 1-2, LEVEL 2, LEVEL 2-3 RIGHT THROUGH TO LEVEL 6. THE CHILDREN HAVE 20 MINUTES TO COMPLETE THE QUIZ AND THEN WE MARK IT STRAIGHT AWAY. DURING THE SESSION CHILDREN CAN USE THE PROMPTS TO HELP THEM BEFORE THEY ASK THE TEACHER FOR HELP. ON A FRIDAY WE THEN SPEND HALF OF THE MATHS LESSON GOING THROUGH THE QUIZ, DISCUSSING ERRORS, GOING THROUGH OTHER EXAMPLES AND MAKING NOTES TO THE HELP THEM TACKLE SIMILAR PROBLEMS FOR THE NEXT WEEK. CHILDREN RECORD THEIR RESULTS EACH WEEK AND NOTE DOWN THE COLOUR THEY HAVE ACHIEVED AND THE AREAS THEY WANT TO WORK ON FOR NEXT WEEK. ONCE A CHILD ACHIEVES 5 CONSECUTIVE GREENS THEY MOVE ONTO THE NEXT LEVEL.

MYMATHS LOGIN DETAILS AND GUIDE WILL BE SENT OUT TO THE WHOLE SCHOOL WITH THE NEWSLETTER TOMORROW. INDIVIDUAL LOGINS FOR EACH CHILD ARE NOT GOING TO BE USED JUST YET. CAN BE USED IN 2 WAYS. TEACHERS CAN SET CHILDREN HOMEWORK VIA MYMATHS THAT IS LEVEL SPECIFIC AND FOCUSES ON SET TOPICS EACH WEEK. (COMING SOON!) PARENTS CAN USE IT WITH THEIR CHILDREN TO ACCESS ANY AREAS OF MATHS. AGAIN YOU CAN SELECT THE SPECIFIC LEVEL FOR EACH CHILD. ( TEACHERS WILL ENSURE CHILDREN KNOW WHAT LEVEL THEY ARE WORKING AT) CURRENT FORMAT FOR MATHS HOMEWORK WILL REMAIN WITH MYMATHS BEING AN ADDITION. CLASS TEACHERS WILL SEND A SHORT NOTE HOME WITH MATHS HOMEWORK EACH WEEK GUIDING CHILDREN TO WHICH AREAS OF MYMATHS TO FOCUS ON THAT WEEK.

CALCULATION POLICY MOST RECENT POLICY IS ON THE SCHOOL WEBSITE. BACK TO TRADITIONAL METHODS- NO MORE CHUNKING OR GRID METHOD. DEVELOPMENTAL THROUGH EACH YEAR GROUP. USEFUL FOR PARENTS TO REFRESH WHICH METHODS WE USE EACH YEAR.

HOW CAN PARENTS HELP? GAMES REAL LIFE/ PRACTICAL APPLICATION: SHOPPING, BAKING, TELLING THE TIME! SING SONGS ( TABLE TROOPERS/ NUMBER FUN HOMEZONE)TABLE TROOPERS/ NUMBER FUN HOMEZONE) HELP WITH HOMEWORK MY MATHS COMING SOON… LINKS TO GOOD WEBSITES ON THE SCHOOL WEBSITE.
