Oxford Glycobiology Institute Department of Biochemistry Teaching by Graduates – Why? 1.CV points – having done some teaching looks good. 2.Money – not much more to say here. 3.Experience – opportunity to find out whether you like teaching or not before taking a job that requires it. 4.Satisfaction – some people just like teaching (yes it does happen). Always discuss any proposed teaching with your supervisor first.

Oxford Glycobiology Institute Department of Biochemistry Teaching by Graduates – Opportunities Supervision of undergraduate practical classes – Mostly done by graduates, organised through the Department Departmental problem classes – Given by graduates and post-graduates, organised through the Department Undergraduate tutorials – A few opportunities for graduates, organised by College tutors Undergraduate lectures – Not normally done by graduate students

Oxford Glycobiology Institute Department of Biochemistry Teaching by Graduates – Practical classes Need to be present during the class to help students with both the practical side and understanding the principles involved. Mostly responding to specific questions from the students. Does not involve designing practicals. Organised by Terry Clarke / Dr Patti Quant

Oxford Glycobiology Institute Department of Biochemistry Teaching by Graduates – Problem classes 1 st year problem classes in: Biophysical chemistry Biological chemistry Elementary maths A class usually involves one tutor to about eight students. Work is set by the class organiser and marked by the tutor, followed by a one hour class to go over any problems. Usually four classes per term. See appropriate class organiser

Oxford Glycobiology Institute Department of Biochemistry Teaching by Graduates – Tutorials Tutorials usually involve one tutor and two students and last about one hour. Tutor has to prepare the tutorial (reading lists, notes), set and mark work – usually has to be an area that you know well. Tutorials are often very wide ranging discussions rather than simply going over answers to problems. Central list of those prepared to tutor in specific topics Approach either College tutors or someone who already tutors in that area

Oxford Glycobiology Institute Department of Biochemistry Teaching by Graduates – Support 1.Practical/class organiser. Provide direct, specific support. 2.One day seminars and longer courses on teaching organised on a regular basis by the Department. (Information from Dr Harris or Dr Quant). 3.Courses organised by the Institute for the Advancement of University Learning. Primarily for University Staff, but graduates are accepted if courses are not fully booked.
