Events that Changed the Characters Life

“His face went from red to green faster than a set of traffic lights. And it didn’t stop there. Within seconds it was the grayish white of old porridge... A wizard, o’ course said Hagrid sitting back down on the sofa” At this point the conflict is Harry’s is receiving letters from Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry for Harry to attend but Harry Uncle will not let Harry attend this school going as far as moving to a remote shack. This shows how close minded the Dudley's really are not accepting Harry just because he is not what they would call normal.

“ ‘ Not Slytherin, eh?’ said the small voice. ‘ Are you sure? You could be great, you know, it’s all here in your head, and Slyterin will help you on the way to greatness, no doubt about that- n? Well, if you’re sure- better be GRYFFINDOR!’ Harry heard the hat shout the last word to the whole hall. He took off the hat and walked shakily toward the Gryffindor table.” This sets up the story because people who are in Gryffindor go on to great things. Also this changes Harry’s life because now he is able to make friends that will proof beneficial later on in the story.

“ Harry felt as if Devil’s Snare was rooting him to the spot. He couldn’t move a muscle. Petrified, he watched as Quirrell reached up and began to unwrap his turban. What was going on? The turban fell away… there was a face, the most terrible face Harry had ever seen. It was chalk white with glaring red eyes and slits for nostrils, like a snake. This is a big step for Harry because this become the first time he faces the dark arts by himself and also the first time he has to face Voldemort even thou it is “he-who- mustn’t-be-names weakest form.

Important Settings

Hogwarts “ The narrow path had opened suddenly onto the edge of a great black lake. Perched atop a high mountain on the other side, its windows sparkling in the starry sky, was a vast castle with many turrets and towers.” This is Harry first glance at the school where he learns magic to help defeat the most evil wizard of all time. This also shows how Hogwarts is older because it has a more medieval structure.

Forbidden Forest- “ He led them to the very edge of the forest. Holding his lamp up high, he pointed down a narrow, winding earth track that disappeared into the thick black trees. A light breeze lifted their hair as they looked into the forest.” This gives Harry another view of the magic world he just found out about for example in this short chapter he is able to see unicorns and other mythical creatures.

Gryffindor Commons- “ and found themselves in the Gryffindor common room, a cozy, round room full of squashy armchairs… directed the girls through one door to their dormitory and the boys through another. At the top of a spiral staircase. This is where Harry will create stronger bonds with friends and also receive a Christmas gift that proves important to Harry later in the story when he foils Voldmort’s plan again.

Type of Narrator- Third Person Limited

“ Go straight to the owlery and send Hedwig to Dumbledore, we need him. I might be able to hold Snape off for a while but I’m no reamatch for him, really.” Harry thought the person in the room was snape when really it was Quirelle and a ominsent narrator would know who really was in that room. Also we would be able to find out a lot earlier the Quirelle was housing Lord Voldmort.

“ ‘ Knew! Shrieked Aunt Petunia suddenly. ‘ Knew! Of course we knew! How could you not be, my dratted sister being what she was?’” Aunt Petunia knew all along what exactly Harry was but the reader did not find out till Hagrid came and told him. Also it shows that we do not know what Everyone in that room was thinking only Harry making it a limited narrator.

“ Right then,’ said Hagrid, ; now, listen carefully,’ cause it’s dangerous what we’re going to do tonight…” This shows how you only know what Harry is thinking when going into the Forbidden Forest. For example Malfoy would be terrified and you would know how terrified he was really quick if this was ominsent.

Author’s Purpose

I believe the authors purpose is to show that you should never under estimate your open. This becomes clear in several examples such as Vodmort facing Harry even though he knew he was to weak to face him. Another example is when Dudley contently picked on Harry, but little did either of them know Harry was the most famous person in his world. Finally my last example would be how Harry was sure Snape was responsible for everything when really everything he was doing was protecting Harry. I believe you should never under estimate your opened and I think that is what J.K Rowling want to get across.
