Introduction What we are going to do: Look at the Assessment Cycle Breakdown the Assessment Plan Unit Mission Statements Key Performance Indicators Measures and Targets What happens later Take time to draft the initial Assessment Plan Return that plan to the Office of Assessment by July 31 st Open your browsers to: Resource WebpageResource Webpage

What is Assessment? Assessment is the process of systematically collecting information about how effectively each unit is performing in order to improve that effectiveness. How?

Step 1: Create / Continue Assessment Plan Step 2: Collect the Data Step 3: Evaluate the Results Step 6: Collect AP Data Step 4: Develop an Action Plan Step 5: Report Findings and Implement Action Plan Improving Unit Effectiveness Step 7: Closing the Loop

Components of an Assessment Plan Unit Mission Statement Key Performance Indicators Measurements Targets

Unit Mission Statement A unit’s mission statement should outline the unit’s major functions. Two to five sentences that describes what the unit does and how it contributes to the University’s mission. Listing the major functions of your unit is a good starting point. Documents that may help: Resource WebpageResource Webpage Mission Statement Worksheet Mission Statement Checklist

Key Performance Indicators The most important factors to know about a unit in order to determine whether it is performing effectively KPIs are the statements we will use to measure the extent to which a unit is successful in accomplishing its major function(s). You should identify at least 3. Resource Webpage Sample KPIs

Key Performance Indicators To develop the unit’s KPIs: Start with an investigation of any information that is already being gathered Consider whether any of these criteria should serve as the unit’s KPIs It is possible that the KPIs are already being measured. The KPIs need to be written in a form that can be readily measured and understood by someone outside of your unit. Operationalization

Measures and Targets The measure is the tool or technique you will use to collect data on a KPI Every KPI needs to have at least one measure There are many ways to collect data. Examples include: Numerical CountsSatisfaction surveysTimelines and budgetsTracking program participation Recruiting resultsTracking ComplaintsExternal MeasuresDocument Review

Measures and Targets The task at this point is to determine what type of data would allow an evaluation of the unit’s current level of effectiveness. As with the KPIs, is data already being gathered? How is it gathered? What is your target level of performance? This is based on industry standards and/or the unit’s historical performance Targets should be realistic, but should represent growth or a high performance level Resource Webpage: KPI Data Collection and Target Checklist Resource Webpage:
