Patterns IN THE PERIODIC TABLE PROJECT Working with your Elbow Partner

Looking at Bohr Models drawn yesterday for your RFA and other Bohr Models drawn in your notes you will try to find patterns in the periodic table. But how???

Color code elements on your Periodic Table based on their # of valence e-. (ONLY COLOR ATOMS in ROWS 1-4 and GROUPS 1-2 and 13-18)

Valence Electron Patterns 1 Valence e- Color element RED 2 Valence e- Color element ORANGE 3 Valence e- (or 13) Color element YELLOW 4 Valence e- (or 14)Color element DARK GREEN 5 Valence e- (or 15)Color element LIGHT GREEN 6 Valence e- (or 16) Color element DARK BLUE 7 Valence e- (or 17)Color element LIGHT BLUE 8Valence e- (or 18)Color element PURPLE

1 8 2 3 4 5 6 7 Valence e-

Finding Ionic Charge Patterns Lithium (Li) Potassium (K) Magnesium (Mg) Calcium (Ca) Boron (B) Aluminum (Al) Carbon (C ) Silicon (Si) Nitrogen (N) Phosphorus (P) Oxygen (O) Sulfur (S) Flourine (F) Chlorine (Cl) Helium (He) Neon (Ne) Argon (Ar)

Find Ionic Charges Look at previous Bohr Models Look at the valence electrons Determine how many electrons it takes to fill outside ring. Decide to move valence electrons in or out (remember to move the least amount) Calculate charge. Subtract ALL the protons from ALL the electrons
