COOLER THAN COOL IT IS ALL ABOUT MINTS

DOES MINT COOL THINGS DOWN IN TEMPERATURE OR IS IT MERELY A SENSATION? QUESTION

PURPOSE THE PURPOSE OF THIS PROJECT IS TO DETERMINE IF FRESH MINT CAN COOL OTHER OBJECTS. IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW THIS BECAUSE YOU WILL KNOW HOW TO COOL DOWN YOUR MOUTH IF YOU EAT SOMETHING HOT.

WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT MINTS WILL COOL THINGS DOWN WE HYPOTHESIZE THAT MINTS WILL COOL THINGS DOWN. We believe this because when you take a breath with a breath mint in your mouth, it makes your mouth feel cold. HYPOTHESIS

PROCEDURES

30 FRESH MINT LEAVES SPARK THERMOMETER 600 mL WATER MATERIALS 30 FRESH MINT LEAVES SPARK THERMOMETER 600 mL WATER

VARIABLES MANIPULATED-MINT LEAVES RESPONDING-WATER TEMPERATURE CONSTANT-AMOUNT OF WATER, SIZE OF CUPS, METHOD OF MEASURING OF WATER TEMPERATURE

DIRECTIONS 1. Fill two 88.7 mL cup with 60 mL room temperature water 2. Record temperature with SPARK thermometer 3. Add 6 mint leaves to the cup of water 4. Wait 10 minutes 5. Record new temperature with the SPARK thermometer 6. Repeat steps one through five for four more trials

This is when we were measuring the water temperature with the SPARK

CONCLUSION OUR HYPOTHESIS WAS INCORRECT. FRESH MINT DOES NOT COOL WATER DOWN IN TEMPERATURE. IT MAKES THE WATER WARMER. The average temperature with the mint was 24.16 degrees Celsius and the average temperature without the mint was 24.08 degrees Celsius. We believe that the menthol in the mint may give off heat.
