International Date Line The International Date Line is the _ _ _° line of ____________, the location where the day “starts” on Earth.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or Universal Time (UT) The 0° line of longitude that is also the _______ ________ that runs through Greenwich, England. Greenwich Mean Time or _____________ _____ is the time standard for time zones.

Greenwich, England

Notes There are _ _ different time zones. Each time zone differs by ____ hour. If you pass west over the International Dateline, you would _______ a day. If you pass east over the International Dateline, you would _______ a day. Each time zone is _______ degrees apart. Why are some time zones jagged? _________________________________________________________

Notes Answers There are 24 different time zones. Each time zone differs by 1 hour. If you pass west over the International Dateline, you would lose a day. If you pass east over the International Dateline, you would gain a day. Each time zone is 15 degrees apart. Why are some time zones jagged? Some countries want their citizens to live in the same time zone, so they are adjusted due to boundary lines.

How to read a time zone map… Read the title. It tells you what the map is intended to show. Read the labels at the top of the map. They show the hours across the world when it is noon in Greenwich, England. Locate a place whose time you currently know (Memphis, TN). Locate the place where you want to know the time. Count the number of time zones between them. Then add or subtract that number of hours. For example, if it is noon time on the west coast of Africa, you can see that it is 7:00 A.M. on the east coast of the United States. That is a difference of 5 hours.

Activity 1 Using your text book (RA 32 + RA33) and the how to read a time zone map instructions, answer the following questions: 1. It is 9pm on Saturday in Hawaii, what time and day would it be in Washington D.C.? ______________________________________________________________ 4.
