MAIN ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN LITHUANIA AND THEIR SOLUTIONS

MAIN ECOLOGICAL PROBLEMS 1. Biodiversity decline. 2. The Baltic sea pollution. 3. Atmospheric pollution problems. 4.Growing number of waste, low recycling rate. 5.The lack of uptake and use of alternative energy sources. 6.Upbringing problem.

Biodiversity decline Over 250 animal species, 400 plants and 120 fungi species known to be threatened

The Baltic sea pollution Pollution reasons: Industry; Agriculture; Shipping; Buried chemical weapons; Transportation of petroleum products; Atmospheric pollutants; Active tourism and recreation.

ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTION Pollution reasons: Road transport (lots of old vehicles); Thermal power plants (6 in Lithuania); Industrial enterprises. Pollution consequences: Smog; Acid rain; Soil degradation processes.

WASTE PROBLEM Great levels of waste production and relatively small portion of processed; Many people are not aware and are not used to sorting, despite of the sufficient number of containers; For some people there is no ecological culture and often we can see this picture

The lack of uptake and use of alternative energy sources. Renewable Energy Resources Consumption in 2003. TWh Estimated consumption in 2010. TWh Timber 7.81 9.50 Straw 0.05 0.50 Landfill gas , biogas 0.02 0.14 Biofuels 0.00 0.72 Large hydropower 1.00 Small -scale hydro 0.32 0.46 Wind Power 0.29 Solar Energy

WHAT IS BEING DONE TO IMPROVE ECOLOGICAL SITUATION IN LITHUANIA? Manufacturing and industrial enterprises are implementing environmentally friendly technologies; Lake and river pollution is being controlled; Administrative penalties for individuals and legal persons have been established; Environmental education has been introduced in educational institutions; Environmental campaigns and events are being organized.

YOUTH ROLE IN IMPROVING ECOLOGICAL SITUATION IN LITHUANIA Every year a cleanup action “Let’s do it” is organized to collect and sort all kind types of waste

LITHUANIA IS THE BEST IN FOREST PROTECTION!!! We are proud of.. LITHUANIA IS THE BEST IN FOREST PROTECTION!!! According to forest conservation assessment, our country is recognized as the best in the world.

Environmental Performance Index EPI, 2012 y. In 2012 y. scientists from U.S.A made an environmental index in which is taking 22 different criteria: 1. Switzerland (76,69 EPI points) 2. Latvia (70,37) 3. Norway (69,92) 4. Luxemburg (69,2) 5. Costa Rica(69,02) 6. France (69) 7. Austria (68,92) 8. Italy (68,9) 9. UK (68,82) and Sweden (68,82) 10. Germany (66,91) 17. Lithuania (65,5) 22. Poland (63,47) 54. Estonia (56,09)
