Family Literacy Quotations By. Hixwell A. Douglas Ph.D. Special Education Unit

The family is the cradle that nurtures the literacy development of all children. H. A. Douglas

“Each day of our lives families make deposits in the literacy banks of their children.” H. A. Douglas

The home provides the fertile soil in which children learn to speak, read, write, listen and compute. H. A. Douglas

Parents can activate the magic in the mind of a child, by showing enthusiasm for reading, modeling the use of language, displaying keen listening and demonstrating the purpose for writing. H. A. Douglas

Parents can ignite a passion for excellent speech, reading, writing and listening in children at all stages of their development, by the things they say and do in everyday routine activities. H. A. Douglas

In helping children develop literacy skills, parents need to provide supportive learning materials and meaningful learning experiences. Parents must monitor the things children read, hear, view and say. They should excite the passion for developing literacy skills in a stimulating and healthy environment. H. A. Douglas

Everyday routine activities can be used as a springboard for teaching literacy in the home. H. A. Douglas

Story telling is a powerful way of captivating the interest of children, and wetting their appitites for reading, speaking, listening and writing, at home and at school. H. A. Douglas

It is easier to build strong literacy foundations for young children, than to remediate struggling teens and adult learners. H. A. Douglas

Children who are read to regularly by parents…become early readers and show a natural interest in books. van Ijzendoorn Bus and A.D. Pellagrini

Family literacy is the key to early literacy development. The family that reads, talks, sings, writes, and encourages each other, learns together. H. A. Douglas

Families that give children an early start in literacy, have made a life-time investment for life-long learning. H. A. Douglas

The strength of a nation depends on the quality of the literacy experiences facilitated in the home and at school. H. A. Douglas

There is no doubt that it is around the family and the home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of human society, are created, strengthened and maintained. Winston Churchill
