Using a Ruler to Measure USCS to Metric / SI Basic Measurements Using a Ruler to Measure USCS to Metric / SI

Objectives - SWBAT Read and Understand a US Customary Ruler Read and Understand a Metric / International System of Units Ruler Convert Inches to fractions of inches and decimal Convert CM to MM on a Metric Ruler Convert Inches to CM Find specific Measurements in any scale on a ruler.

Why Different Measurements In the US, we use the Customary System ( USCS ) to read rulers. These are broken down into Feet, Inches, and fractions of inches. Everywhere outside of the US, the Metric System is used. It is broken down into Meters, Cm (centimeters), and Mm (millimeters). Currently, the Metric system is being updated. While most of the measurements will be the same, some will change. This new system is known as The International System of Units, or SI for short.

Understanding METRIC / SI 0 cm 1 cm Centimeters are divided into 10 Millimeters 10 mm = 1 cm 100 cm = 1 meter 1 inch = 2.54 cm

Understanding METRIC / SI 0 cm 1 cm 6 mm or .6 cm

Understanding METRIC / SI 0 cm 1 cm 3 mm or .3 cm

Understanding METRIC / SI 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters How many centimeters is 4 inches? 4 x 2.54 = 10.16 centimeters How many centimeters is 1 foot? 12 x 2.54 = 30.48 centimeters How many inches and is 72 centimeters? 72 ÷ 2.54 = 28.346 inches ÷ 12 = 2.36 feet
