BRAIDING & BRAIDING EXTENSIONS MILADY’S CH-16 PAGES 367-394 s

LEARNING OBJECTIVES Perform a client consultation and hair analysis with respect to hair braiding Explain how to prepare the hair for braiding. Demonstrate the procedure for invisible , rope and fishtail braid. Demonstrate single braid with and without extensions.

Client Consultation Hair analysis, hair diameter and wave pattern and feel of the hair. Facial shapes : Oval, Round, Square Diamond, Triangular, Heart shaped and Oblong.

Tools for Braiding Boar-bristle brush (natural hairbrush) paddle brush ,vent brush Combs wide tooth and tail comb and a finishing comb and a pick with rounded teeth . Blow dryer with pick nozzle and a diffuser Long clips and butterfly clips

Tools for Braiding Extension fibers kanekalon, nylon, rayon and human hair as well as yarn , lin and yak. Hackle Drawing board Notes : Hackle is a board with fine upright nails through which human hair extensions are combed used for detangling or blending colors and highlights Drawing board is a flat leather pads with very close and fine teeth that sandwich the human extensions the pads weight down with books and required amount of hair needed without loosening and disturbing the rest of hair during the process of braiding

Materials for Extensions Human hair is the gold standard for hair extensions. Kanekalon a manufactured synthetic of excellent quality . But it does not reflect light which means less shine. Nylon or rayon synthetic this product is less expensive than kanekalon. Yarn its made of cotton and a nylon blend

Materials for Extensions Lin this is a beautiful wool fiber imported from Africa has a matte finish comes only in brown or black Yak this is the strong comes from the domestic ox found in the mountains Tibet and central Asia .Yak can be used alone or its blended with human hair. Notes read the caution on pg. 374 And when working on wet or dry hair when working on curly hair it is best to braid dry When working on straight and resistant hair is best to braid slightly damp and very lightly coated with wax or pomade. Texture hair presents certain challenges when styling it is fragile both wet and dry most braiding styling require it to be done on dry hair .

Braiding the Hair Visible braid Invisible braid Rope braid Fishtail braid Single braid Cornrows

Locks (dreadlocks) Locks also called dreadlocks are natural textured hair that is intertwined and meshed together to form a single or separate network of hair

Basic Locking Methods Comb technique Palm roll Braids or extensions Notes comb technique particularly effective during early stages of locking while the coil is still open Palm roll this method is the gentlest on the hair and guides it through all stages of locking. Braids or extensions another effect way of locking involves sectioning the hair for the desired size of lock and single braiding the hair to the ends then synthetic or human hair can be added to the single braid after several weeks the braid grows away from the scalp the palming method is used Shaping dreadlocks take patience and commitment on the part of the client.
