ENGR 2214 – Course Introduction This course is at a level which gives students the background and mathematical tools to take subsequent specialty courses like Dynamics, Fluid Mechanics and Strength of Materials, etc. For the student who wishes an overview of the subject, the topic coverage is broad enough to provide a comprehensive introduction. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

Course text and SOL The text for the course is Engineering Mechanics: Statics, 11e, Hibbeler, 2007, Prentice Hall. Other suggested textbooks are: Engineering Mechanics: Statics. By W.F. Riley and L.D. Sturges. Published by John Wiley and Sons, Inc., New York. Vector Mechanics for Engineers: Statics. By F. P. Beer and E. R. Johnson, published by McGraw-Hill. The text is meant as a reference and for supplemental assigned reading, lecture notes will deviate in both content and approach. In addition, we shall use the Statics On Line or SOL (Nasseri and USYD Copyrighted): www.aeromech.usyd.edu.au/statics Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

Course grade determination Your grade in this course will be determined from your performance on Homework assignments, Class work and Matlab tutorial sessions, Tests and quizzes Mid-term and final examinations. (*) bonus points Homework will be assigned after certain modules have been completed. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

Course content- Topic coverage What is Statics? What you need to know from Maths, What you need to know from Physics, Units of measurement, Vector components (3D), Statics of Particles, Forces and moments, Equilibrium for rigid bodies, The analysis of trusses, Frames and machines, Internal forces, Friction, Center of gravity and centroids, Moments of Inertia. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is statics? Branch of physical sciences concerned with the state of rest or motion of bodies subjected to forces is called Mechanics. The following diagram shows that Statics stands under solid mechanics of rigid bodies. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is statics? Statics is actually the application of mathematics and basic physics (Newton’s laws) to study forces in materials, machines and structures.  Forces are of interest to engineers for two reasons: they cause materials to deform and break, and they cause things to move.  Statics is used to calculate forces in systems that don’t move, or move at constant velocity.  The application of physics to study motion is known as dynamics. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is Statics? Relation between forces and displacements F Determine the components of a force in rectangular or nonrectangular coordinates. Determine the resultant of a system of forces. Draw complete and correct free-body diagrams and write the appropriate equilibrium equations from the free-body diagram. Determine the support reactions on a structure. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is Statics? Determine the internal reactions in a beam, draw correct shear-force and bending moment diagrams, and write equations for the shear-force and bending moment as functions of position along the beam. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is Statics? Trusses Determine the connection forces in trusses and in general frame structures. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is Statics? Analyze systems that include frictional forces. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri

What is Statics? Locate the centroid of an area. (center of mass or center of gravity) Calculate the mass moment of inertia, and the area moment of inertia. Statics (ENGR 2214) Prof. S. Nasseri
