General Industry Standards Personal Protective Equipment

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Today’s agenda You will learn how Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) issues relate to our facility. We will discuss: Rules for PPE use Types of PPE that are available What requirements apply to our facility

PPE: What is it? Personal protective equipment, or PPE, is designed to protect employees from serious workplace injuries or illnesses resulting from contact with hazards, such as: Chemical Radiological Physical PPE includes: Face shields Safety glasses Hard hats Safety shoes Goggles Coveralls Gloves Vests Ear plugs/muffs Respirators Electrical Mechanical Other Hazards

Importance of PPE PPE is known as the last line of defense against an injury Any questions regarding PPE should be directed to your supervisor

PPE rules Users must be trained and authorized to use PPE PPE procedures must be followed at all times PPE must be inspected prior to each use Never use damaged or defective PPE PPE not provided by the Company must be approved by your supervisor PPE has a useful life span—replace at or before that date Failure to follow safety procedures can lead to discipline, up to and including discharge, however, the real reason to follow safety procedures is to prevent accidents!

How to use PPE Check to be sure that you have the size and model of PPE that you were trained and fitted for Inspect before use Follow proper procedures for donning (putting on) and doffing (taking off) Keep PPE clean and store the PPE in the designated, clean and dry location

Eye and face protection Safety glasses with side shields protect against flying particles Goggles protect against dust and chemical splash Face shields provide face protection but must always be worn with safety glasses Special protection is required for welding, flame cutting and laser exposure

Head protection Hard hats provide protection from impacts, and some hard hats provide protection from electrical shock Bump caps do not provide impact protection, rather offer only minimal protection from obstructions or projections in the work area

PPE foot protection Safety-toe work shoes or boots provide protection form falling or rolling objects or from penetration Special foot PPE can be required when working in wet areas or where chemicals are present

Electrical PPE Insulating line hose and blankets Insulated tools Gloves and other protective apparel

PPE hand protection Cut and abrasion resistant gloves Heat resistant gloves Chemical resistant gloves

PPE body protection Aprons Sleeve guards Leggings and spats Suits

Our PPE requirements PPE required in our plant and how to use the PPE: [insert information] PPE storage and sanitation locations: [insert information] Questions regarding PPE can be addressed to your supervisor. [insert information] Replacement and special PPE can be found at: [insert information]

Conclusion PPE is the last line of defense Always wear PPE when required Inspect PPE before each use Clean and store properly after use The Correct PPE Keeps the Hazard In Check!
