Establishing a PPE Program A PPE program sets out procedures for selecting, providing and using PPE as part of an employer’s routine operation The first essential step is to assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present, or are likely to be present, which necessitate the use of PPE Once the proper PPE has been selected, the employer must provide training to each employee who is required to use PPE

l (d)(1) The employer shall assess the workplace to determine if hazards are present … which necessitate the use of personal protective equipment. If such hazards are present …., the employer shall: –i) select and have affected employee use –ii) communicate selection decisions to each affected employee –iii) select PPE that properly fits

l (d)(2) Employer shall verify that the required workplace hazard assessment has been performed through a WRITTEN CERTIFICATION that identifies: – the workplace assessed – the person certifying that the assessment has been performed –date(s) of the assessment –the document as a certification of hazard assessment VERIFICATION OF ASSESSMENT

l (f)(1) The employer shall provide training to each employee who is required by the PPE section to use PPE … shall be trained to know at least the following: ›when PPE is necessary ›what PPE is necessary ›how to properly don, doff, adjust and wear PPE ›the proper care, maintenance, useful life and disposal of the PPE PPE

The Standard Applies to: General industry workers performing servicing and maintenance on machines and equipment who are exposed to unexpected energization, startup, or release of hazardous energy.
