Pablo Picasso By: Shelby Ward

Background Information Picasso was born in Malaga, Spain October 25th, 1881. From the age of 10 Pablo’s parents started to notice many adept qualities in their son. His main influence was his father who was an art professor. Picasso was an art prodigy.

Nu au Plateau de Sculpteur This is a painting of, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso’s mistress. This painting took only a day to create in March 1932. It is more than 5 by 4 feet. Made Top 5 of the 10 most expensive paintings ever, selling for $106,500,000.

Les Demoiselles d’Avignon or The Young Ladies of Avignon This picture was painted at the beginning of Picasso’s Black Period which focused mainly on African American subjects. It also started his Cubism movement. The form of cubism used in this picture is Analytical Cubism which focuses mainly on geometrical shapes.

Cubism! Les Demoiselles d’Avignon inspired a new form of artwork that made Picasso famous beyond belief. After his Black Period, Picasso founded a new period in art that became widely known as Cubism Cubism was a movement in modern art that emphasized the geometrical depiction of natural forms.

The Death of Casagemas Picasso Painted this picture at the beginning of his Blue Period. He painted it because his close friend Carlos Casagemas had just committed suicide. In the picture, his subject is Carlos.

Self Portrait All well known famous artists tend to leave behind a self portrait. This was also done in Analytical Cubism

Guernica This was Picasso’s depiction of the Spanish War and the bombing in Guernica. In this picture, he uses Cubism yet again, but this time in a different style. He uses what is known as synthetic Cubism which was where the shapes were all over the place, everything was reduced in size, very chaotic, and it was hard to distinguish the form.

The Weeping Woman The picture was painted during Picasso’s cubism movement. He uses sharp colors all around the neutral shades of blue and grey in the middle. Picasso painted this to show what the Spanish War was doing to the country and its people instead of just the direct bombings. Dora Maar, a photographer during the war, was the model for the painting.

Guy with Guitar This picture was painted during Picasso’s Blue Period. The Blue Period occurred while Picasso was in a deep state of depression that lasted all through the Rose Period. The only difference between the Blue and Rose Period is that blue was the dominant color.

Dora Maar with Cat This was another one of Picasso’s mistresses. She was a photographer in the depression. She modeled for many of his paintings.

“Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” “All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.” Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Clito Ruiz y Picasso “Colors, like features, follow the changes of the emotions.” Picasso was a painter all of his life. There was never really any other career option. As a child prodigy, he was in several art academy’s and was trained by the best. His blue, rose, and Black periods reflect upon his character and feelings and in return produced many authentic, famous pieces of art still in museums today.
