JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November CAHSEE Requirement All California public school students must satisfy the CAHSEE requirement, as well as all other state and local requirements, to receive a public high school diploma. The CAHSEE requirement can be satisfied by passing the exam or, for students with disabilities, receiving a local waiver pursuant to Education Code Section 60851(c), or receiving an exemption pursuant to Education Code Section through December 31, 2007.

Although SSID numbers are not required for adult students, if an adult student has SSID please complete SSID demographic field. Districts are encouraged to obtain SSIDs for those Adult Education students who are taking CAHSEE and do not have an SSID.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Test Dates The CAHSEE administrations for the remainder of the school year are: –December 1 and 8, 2007 (Saturdays) –February 5-6, 2008 –March 11-12, 2008 –May 6-7, 2008 CAHSEE administrations through the school year can be found at the following CDE Web site:

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Test Scheduling Guidelines Whenever possible, districts should begin testing between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. on the day of testing to ensure test security. Students on non-traditional school day schedules and the Saturday administrations may begin later if test security can be ensured. District coordinator must ETS CAHSEE Support prior to administration to inform of irregular test schedule.

Students who are repeating a grade should be provided as many opportunities to test as all other students in that grade. The July administration is restricted to grade 12 and adult students.

Do not administer both parts on the same day. The December administration can be used for eligible grade 11, 12, and adult students.

Must be provided at least two opportunities to test per school year. May not retake any portion of the exam previously passed.

School districts will be required to acknowledge this prior to ordering test materials for the May 2008 administration.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November –07 Apportionments School districts will receive: $3.00 for each student tested on one or both parts of the CAHSEE. $0.32 for each answer document with completed demographic information submitted for grade 10 students who were absent during the February or March census administrations. The Apportionment Information Reports were mailed in September 2007.

Each must certify the accuracy of the Apportionment Information Report by signing and returning to CDE. Certified reports must be postmarked by December 31, If postmarked after this date, the reports must be accompanied by a waiver request as provided by Education Code Section

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Student Results Retention Requirements Districts must maintain in each student’s permanent record the following information: –The date(s) the student took the CAHSEE. –Whether the student satisfied the CAHSEE requirement for each section of the exam. Must be entered in the student’s permanent record within 60 days of receiving data files from test contractor.

Education Code, Section and California Code of Regulations 438.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Test Variations CAHSEE Regulations identify: –Variations for all students –Variations for English learners –Accommodations for special education students –Modifications for special education students Unlisted Variations –After the December 2007 administration, LEAs will need to seek CDE approval at least 30 days prior to administration.

English learners must be provided with certain test variations if regularly provided in the classroom or used for assessment.

At the request of the student’s parent or guardian, a school principal must submit to the local school board a request for a waiver of the requirement to pass the part(s) of the CAHSEE on which a modification was used and the equivalent of a passing score was earned.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Local Waiver Process (continued) For the local board to waive the CAHSEE requirement, the principal must certify the pupil has: (1) An IEP or Section 504 Plan that requires the modifications to be provided to the pupil when taking the CAHSEE. (2) Completion, or in the process of completion, of high school-level coursework sufficient to have attained the skills and knowledge otherwise needed to pass the CAHSEE. (3) A score report showing that the student received the equivalent of a passing score on the CAHSEE while using a modification.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Exemption for Certain Students with Disabilities Education Code Section provides an exemption of the CAHSEE requirement to certain students with disabilities scheduled to receive a diploma in Eligibility Verification Forms should be used to document student eligibility for this exemption. This law is in effect through December 31, 2007.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Test Variations, Local Waiver, and Exemption for Adult Students with Disabilities Adult students with disabilities are eligible for test variations, including accommodations and modifications, as well as the local waiver request process and exemption. Adult students with disabilities can receive the above services under a Section 504 Plan or, until age 22, under an IEP.

JACK O’CONNELL State Superintendent of Public Instruction California High School Exit Examination (CAHSEE) November Remediation Education Code Section Districts must provide remediation to students in grades 7 through 12 who do not show sufficient progress toward passing the CAHSEE. Education Code Section (Intensive Instruction and Services Grant): –$72.7 million statewide. –All LEAs that applied will receive funding. –LEAs will receive up to $520 for each grade 12 student who has not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE. –Any remaining funds will be distributed to LEAs for grade 11 students.
