STUDY ABROAD: KEELE UNIVERSITY By: Krista Rynd & Elizabeth Eisermann

WHAT IS STUDY ABROAD?  Study abroad is an opportunity to broaden ones education in a different country.  Our study abroad opportunity was held in Staffordshire, England at Keele University.

STUDY ABROAD PROCESS:  If you are interested/required to study abroad you will have to partake in the following:  Speak to a counselor  Look up study abroad opportunities on your university’s website to see if it has relevant classes for your major  Apply to the study abroad program of your choice  HAVE FUN!

LIBERAL STUDIES MAJORS:  Our major is Liberal Studies. This means that we are studying to become primary school teachers.  The study abroad program that we attended was specifically for our majors. Krista and I took Liberal Studies 300 as our class which gave us the opportunity to visit different schools in the city of Staffordshire.

CLOUGH HALL TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL:

ENGLISH SCHOOL SYSTEM:  Age 4-5: “Reception” (Kindergarten)  Year 1- Year 6: “Primary School” (Elementary School)  Year 7- Year 11: “Secondary School” (Middle/High School)  At age 16, you are required to take the General Certificate of Secondary Education Exam. (GCSE)  The GCSE will test in the following subjects: math, science, and English.  After you pass the exam, you have four choices.  Sixth form, performing arts college, apprenticeship, inactive military (not active until age 18)  Oftsted/National Curriculum

CULTURE SHOCK:  Although England may seem very similar to the United States, it is very different.  The accents there are very proper and differ depending on the part of England that you live in.  However, they are very difficult to understand. Especially if you’re an English language learner.  Compared to a very flavorful palate that San Diegans are used to, England’s food is very bland and hard to get used to.
