Why Option Football? S S B B B C C E T T E Conventional offense: 5 ½ Defenders to 4 ½ Blockers Double Option Play: 4 ½ Defenders to 4 ½ Blockers Triple Option Play: 3 ½ Defenders to 4 ½ Blockers

Advantages of the Short Pistol Why The Showgun? Advantages of the Short Pistol We have emphasized for years for the QB to step deep at 5 o’clock or 7 o’clock to mesh our triple play. The short pistol accommodates our desire for depth by aligning the QB 2 1/2 yards away from the center. We reduce the box with our alignment of our slots – our slots previously lined up 1 x 1 off of the outside leg of the tackle when we were under center. Now they align 5 yards wide and level with the quarterback. We did this to make the orbit motion the correct angle.

Advantages of the Short Pistol Why The Showgun? Advantages of the Short Pistol Quick passing game – Our quarterback simply catches the snap and is in position to throw the quick game. It hits vertically quicker than the true shotgun or true pistol and just a little slower than the under center option game (we lost a yard on our fullbacks alignment). It protects the mesh from being attacked.

Advantages of the Short Pistol Why The Showgun? Advantages of the Short Pistol It allows us to widen our splits to 3 feet in the A gap and 3 1/2 feet in the B gap which spreads the defense out and creates great blocking angles and natural creases. It forces the hand-off key to be very definitive in his angle to attack the dive back. Consequently, it makes the read for the quarterback easier. It gives the quarterback more time to read the hand-off key and then transition his eyes to the pitch key, because the pitch key is wider due to our alignment and line splits.

Implementation Accommodations for the Short Pistol Offense A two handed snap with end-to-end rotational spin. We had two mishandled snaps this past season in over 750 snaps. The running back lines up with his Helmet five yards from the tip of the ball.

Implementation Accommodations for the Short Pistol Offense The slots must be lined up on the same horizontal plane as the quarterback. Your motion must be quick and at an angle where the defense cannot recognize the goal of the motion. “undetectable motion”. The quarterback’s footwork is more pivot style footwork rather than stepping on an imaginary clock. The quarterback has to be louder in our no huddle option attack, he is our communicator.

Alignment / Splits QB toes 2½ Yds. from tip of the ball 5 yards from tackle And level with QB 5 yards from tackle And level with QB RB Helmet 5 yds from tip of the ball

Inside Veer Our Base Play Before we talk about variations, we should have a brief understanding of what our base play is & how it is executed.

Inside Veer The Play’s Value It is three plays in one to each side of the football. 3 ½ defenders vs. 4 ½ blockers. By reading two guys on one side of the ball it gives the offense a decisive advantage. It opens up many more opportunities for your offense because the defense must stop this play first. It is a great red zone offense. Ball goes down hill fast. You only have to learn how to read and mesh and that only takes time. If the coach and players are willing to commit to mesh, your team can really be good.

What stunt defenses think give option teams the most trouble Inside Veer What stunt defenses think give option teams the most trouble Many Defenses will turn to what we call the “OPTION SWITCH” stunt, having the DE crash & ILB play over the top – scraping outside.

The Option Switch Stunt Inside Veer The Option Switch Stunt FS C C W M S B E T T E

What the QB must Understand Inside Veer What the QB must Understand Quarterback must know that he can never pitch off the ILB unless we are blocking the pitch key. – Put your foot in the ground & get vertical

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” If we believe the LB is reading the backfield, we would look at basing up the front side making it look like inside veer in the backfield and the ILB will run himself out of the play OR Motioning away from the side we dive to get his movement going in the wrong direction and base it up

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” If the play side LB is reading the backfield to play over the top, a base scheme will defeat that stunt W M S B E T T E

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” 2. Another attempt would be to “bang release” the hand-off key and hope that the ILB comes over top too fast. The tackle will have the same assignment, but if the ILB plays over the top, he will then go to backside ILB.

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” 3. Another option is to motion the slot across the formation & insert that same backside slot and arch the tackle. This creates a double option play.

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” If the play side LB is reading the OG or OT, this will get him regardless of filling or option switching – a double option answer W M S B E T T E

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” 4. Our next option would be to block the play side ILB with the slot.

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” If the play side LB is reading the OG or OT, this will get him regardless of filling or option switching –understand the FS is unblocked now W M S B E T T E

Adjustments for the “Option Switch” Inside Veer Adjustments for the “Option Switch” 5. The last option would be to block the pitch key with the slot and pitch off the ILB. 6. We could use a tight end or H back to break their scheme.

Zone Read F C C B B B B T T E E OL Technique: From the Center to the backside, all Linemen will step away from the play at a 45 degree angle, if there is a level 1 defender, drive him (drive reach). If no level 1 defender, step at 45 degrees (ensure no spark), and release straight to the LB in your track.

Jet Zone Read Inverted Veer F C C B B B B T T E E QB Technique Deeper alignment, Shuffle with the mesh toward handoff key, give the ball unless the HOK takes it away, then dive into the “B” gap. (QB is the Dive Back & RB takes it to the Perimeter, hence the tag: “Inverted Veer”)
