Need for e-commerce portal  Internet has impacted on the way we interacted with friends, carried out our business operations  Has impacted on brand equity of a firm  ecommerce surviving and growing every year  Survived 7/11 because internet based organizations executed their disaster recovery  Survival was easy for the organizations who had e-commerce portal  Could regroup faster  adopted changes in the regulations faster  Least affected in corporate accounting scandals  After dot com bust, ecommerce was an essential and growing part of the organizations  e-commerce portal gives optimum benefits  aligned with business model 3

 consolidate IT infrastructure  reduce costs in maintaining  meet all the requirements of regulatory as well as other stakeholders, such as  Human Resource (HR) portal,  Finance portal,  Marketing portal  CIO is asked to justify existence of each portal and provide the value to the stakeholders  align the business model with technology investment  e-commerce portal strategy is desirable in consultation with all stakehilders 4 Delivering Value through e-commerce portal

Role of CIO in portal design  Role of CIO has been defined in many forward looking organizations  use IT to support business goals  initiatives in IT infrastructure  align IT goals with vision and mission  CIO is responsible for the information technology and computer systems that support organization goals  Use IT as a strategic tool for business models  CIO is involved with analyzing and reworking existing business processes  identifying and exploiting the enterprise's knowledge resources  to integrate IT with immediate business plans  Prepares an effective risk management plan  Involves stakeholders participation in decision making  On summary, CIO has a combined role of enterprise architects, project managers, and business analysts 6
