Audio-visual media in L2 teaching

What media do you use? Video (self made) With free software Jing Example 2

How do you use it? By using the functionality of Jing, I produce a video to provide feedback to students’ written work 3

Why do you use it? Jing allows capture screen as well as recording one’s voice. Hence the result of this allows both written and verbal feedback to the students which is highly efficient for language learners 4

What are the benefits? The feedback is in both written form as well as oral form One can choose different format of the feedback: For example, one can choose to record and correct at the same time or separately; one can highlight mistakes or simply give general feedback It can be shared easily; it can be saved easily 5

What are the challenges? The free Jing version only allows up to 5mins recording It is easy to use but simply training is still needed 6

What are the technical requirements? Internet Word process 7

What is the teacher’s evaluation? It allows more effective feedback with more information provided to the students It allows a variety of ways to provide feedback depending on the task and the students’ performance It applies to both face to face or distance learning contexts It can be used by the students in a collaboratively way 8

What is the students’ evaluation? Students particularly like to hear the voice of the teacher rather than merely written feedback – particularly this offers another opportunity of listening training and pronunciation training possibility 9

What is the copyright implication? None 10

Any further comments? 11

Recommendations It is suitable for what levels? All levels. It is best used to train what linguistic skills? Here is mainly to provide feedback, can be useful also for listening skills. How long is the production time? Up to 5mins. Is it for general or specific purposes? Both. 12
