Dance is the soul language

Spanish folk dance Is there a “Spanish folk dance”? No, there isn’t. There are as many kinds of folk dances as regions in Spain. From Catalonia to Canary Islands, from Galicia to Andalusia. Diverse regions, diferents folk songs and dances. European, Arabic and South American people can meet in the different Spanish folk tradition.

Spain is, perhaps, one of the places all over the western world where folk dance has the deepest roots. Its richness and its originality are clear. You can find over two thousand ritual dances, with a religious even secular sense. from primitive, candid and inocent to complex and well- developed; from symbolical, religious and ritual to amorous, dramatic, ceremonial, recreational and exultant.

Let’s see three Spanish folk dances Flamenco Chotis El baile del vivo

Flamenco It’s the most famous Spanish dance. It is from Andalusia. Flamenco has got an unique technique. Its performer only needs a very little space to dance

Chotis Tipical dance and song from Madrid. They dance in pairs. The man twists on a brick, allways looking ahead

El baile del vivo One of dances from Canary Islands. The woman tries to take off the man’s hat. She grimaces and the man imitates.

Spanish folk dance by IES Lila, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Music: Zaragoza la Romana, by Carmen Paris (Jotera lo serás tú)
