Learning Objective Students will learn to add and subtract integers using a variety of strategies.

What is an integer? An integer is a whole number (not a fractional number) that can be positive, negative, or zero. Examples of integers are: -5, 1, 5, 8, 97, and 3,043 .

Using a Number Line When using a number line to add or subtract integers: Add a positive integer by moving to the right on the number line Add a negative integer by moving to the left on the number line Subtract an integer by adding its opposite

Rules For Adding Integers Adding Rules: Positive + Positive = Positive: 5 + 4 = 9  Negative + Negative = Negative: (- 7) + (- 2) = - 9 Sum of a negative and a positive number: Use the sign of the larger number and subtract (- 7) + 4 = -3 6 + (-9) = - 3  (- 3) + 7 = 4 5 + ( -3) = 2

Rules For Subtracting Integers Subtracting Rules: Negative - Positive = Negative: (- 5) - 3 = -5 + (-3) = -8 Positive - Negative = Positive + Positive = Positive: 5 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8  Negative - Negative = Negative + Positive = Use the sign of the larger number and subtract(Change double negatives to a positive) (-5) - (-3) = ( -5) + 3 = -2 (-3) - ( -5) = (-3) + 5 = 2
