Lunar Wheel 1st Update

No Competition Options for moving forward o Continue as if there would be a competition o Taking the previous MAE 435 phases and develop them into a working prototype o Identify the issues and failure of the previous design sent to competition and develop solutions o Ultimately the group decided to continue our work from the previous semester

Final Group Decision Dr. Britcher advised us to move forward with what was chosen with our design with the MAE 434W last semester

Vehicle Specifications ●Guidelines and specifications based on 2000 Chevy Silverado ●Wheel measurements: ○ 9.25” wide ○ 6.93” sidewall ○ overall diameter of 29.87” ○ 16” diameter rim

Issues Tolerance issues with current design as there was not as much room in the wheel as there would have been in the NASA testing vehicle Solution to interference o increase back spacing; use wheel spacer Clearance Issues Possible interference with the rear leaf springs

Material Selections 6xxx series alloys contain magnesium and silicon and these alloys have a good balance of corrosion resistance and strength Examined Aluminum 6061 T6, 6063 T6,and 6066 T6 based on strength, corrosion resistance, malleability, cost, and operation temperature tolerances

Material Chosen Aluminum alloy 6061 T6 has reasonable yield strength, relative low cost, and good corrosion resistance Possible purchase from McMaster-Carr

Issue with designing It was observed that the springs that were to be used in the tread would not have the load bearing capacity that was needed The design group discussed the possibilities with the group in charge of springs Determined that the current spring design for the tread was untenable

Group Virtual Meeting Group decided to revisit a portion of an older wheel design Corrugated tread design was chosen in place of the spring mounted feet Corrugated material would be mounted onto the existing hub and tread could be supplemented with rivets

Move forward with testing The design team is hard at work finishing up the digital 3D models Testing phase will begin soon
