Why Study Home Economics as a Leaving Certificate subject?

 20% Practical Food Journal.  80% Theory : Food studies  Consumer Studies  Resource management.  Social studies  An elective is also chosen in 6 th year from a group of three including home design and management, textiles fashion and design and social studies. This elective is also worth 20%.

 17 students are taking Home Economics to Leaving Cert. Of this group, 12 are taking the higher –level paper with only 5 taking the ordinary-level paper.  Many of these students hope to follow careers in the practical food industry, food science or social science.  As well as this, this subject gives them the opportunity to gain valuable life skills as well as well-deserved points in the Leaving Cert.

 Degree Courses Related to the Food Industry:  -BSc in food business eg. marketing, product development. There is a growing demand for food business students worldwide.  -BSc in food technology.  -BSc in food science.  -BSc in nutritional sciences eg. nutritionists play a significant role in highlighting the relationship of diet to health.
