The Eight Forms of Energy  Energy can neither be created nor destroyed  Most the energy on our planet comes from the sun  Without Energy, no work could be done!

An overview of the Energy Forms

Gravitational energy is the energy that an object has while it is suspended above the Earth. Gravitational Energy

Light Energy  A form of energy you can see  The sun and the stars  There are many sources that can supply light as energy:  Stars, Electricity, Fires, etc

Thermal Energy Heat energy is the result of particles in motion Explained by the KMT Excessive heat causes pain sensors in your skin to fire madly, indicating pain from heat Heat comes from many sources: 1.Electrical Energy 2.Chemical Energy (for example, fires) 3.Mechanical energy (rubbing your hands)

Magnetic Energy an energy form that causes some objects to repel and others to attract each other It is related to electricity, which we will explain fully in grade 10

Elastic Energy the build up of energy (potential) is stored in an object until it is finally released Earthquakes Rubber Bands

Sound Energy sound energy is caused by vibrating particles, which pass a sound wave through air or some other medium like water Some of the best vibrations pass through water, which is why whales can communicate long distances

Chemical Energy 1.The food we eat contains chemical energy 2.That energy is released by digestion 3.Chemical energy is also stored in chemical compounds like TNT, you know as dynamite.

Mechanical Energy The energy of motion Your bicycle is a perfect example Anything that moves has mechanical energy that we can measure

Nuclear Energy Nuclear power comes from releasing the power stored in the ATOM!!!! Force two H atoms together and massive energy is released Split He into 2 Hydrogen atoms and you release energy in huge quantities!

Electrical Energy Electricity comes from many sources. It runs your lamps, stereo, toaster, DVD, and the washing machine!

What does all this mean to you? 1. Energy has 10 forms and you must know them !! 2. Energy can be transformed between the types. Eg Electical to heat !

A Quick Quiz! 1. Name 4 forms of energy. 2. What is magnetic energy? Give eg. 3. What is chemical energy? Give eg. 4. How does an elastic store elastic energy? 5. What is the major source of energy for the planet Earth? What types of energy does this source give us?

That’s all Folks
