STAT Technician Roles and Responsibilities

STAT Technician Responsibilities STAT technician assists during cartfill process by delivering morning respiratory batches. – STAT technician delivers Williams Ward cartfill on Saturday and Sunday. Any medication sent with a yellow label or any white label with a red “STAT” sticker placed on it is hand-delivered to the nurse by the STAT technician. STAT medications are expected to be to the floor within 20 minutes of print time. At the end of the day, STAT technician should coordinate with other technicians to ensure all medications are delivered from Premix area, including pass-through windows. STAT technicians are expected to assist other pharmacy teams between deliveries.

Creation of IV Recycle List The STAT technician is responsible for scanning the recycled medications in the premix room to create a list for the pharmacy staff inside the IV room. Process for initiating list creation: – Select “Recycle” on ScanIV – Click the “Options” button, select “Enable this content” and click okay. – Click the “Refresh Returns List” and click okay. – Begin scanning both refrigerated and non-refrigerated items. – Click “Print Returns List” and inform staff in cleanroom that they can retrieve the new list from the printer. – This is done at 7:00, 10:00, 14:00, 17:00 and 19:00. Refrigerated recycled medications are kept on the top shelf of the refrigerator. Non-refrigerated items are kept in a yellow bin under the printer. If there is any difficulty in completing this task on time, the technician working in the Premix room should be notified to assist.

STAT Medication Delivery The delivery log kept next to the premix room door is used to track each STAT medication as it is prepared and delivered. During each delivery, information is recorded into the log sheet and signed by the nurse verifying receipt of delivery. Medications which are not needed or not needed currently can be placed in the appropriate storage location or returned to the pharmacy, but nursing staff should still sign for receipt of medication. In the event of a medication that must be locked in Omnicell cabinet, nursing staff must still be notified that the item has been delivered and a signature should still be obtained. HUCs are at the front desk of each unit and can assist in the location of specific nursing staff. In the event that a nurse is not present on the unit, another nurse (such as the charge nurse) can sign for the medication and notify the nurse in charge of patient care. In the rare event that there is no one willing or able to sign for the medication, store the medication per normal guidelines and document this on the STAT delivery log.

STAT Medication Delivery Log This is an example of the delivery log for STAT medications. This information is tracked and recorded daily to follow trends and track success with the STAT delivery process. In the event that a situation requires specific notation (STAT medications delivered late, STAT medications for which no signature was obtained, etc.) a notation may be made in the margins or on the back of the STAT log.

Auxiliary STAT Delivery Notes Cards Auxiliary STAT delivery notes can be used by hourly rounding technicians or other staff to deliver STAT medications without the need to obtain the STAT delivery log. These individual notes collect the same information as the STAT delivery log and are kept in both STAT bins (one in the First Dose area and one in the Premix area).

STAT Medication Delivery In the event that the STAT technician is unavailable to deliver an item, the rounding floor technician can be contacted to assist in delivery. – As rounding technicians may be delayed in returning to pharmacy to retrieve STAT medications, this should be reserved for more severe situations. Individual “note cards” can be found in the STAT bin in the First Dose and Premix areas for rounding technicians to collect nurses’ signatures without needing the STAT log. Used “note cards” can be placed in coordinator’s mailbox.
