ACTIVE SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS VS. PASSIVE SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTIONS KONSTANTINA OUZOUNOGLOU

THE SCOPE OF MY LAC PROJECT To create supplemental learning material that will trigger students of Civil Engineering to:  Become aware over environmental issues,  Get informed on the environmental effects of building technologies, and  Learn how building technologies are combined with environmental issues, business strategies and policies.

THE PLAN  Create a series of lectures  Communicate and inform students through social media  Make a proposal for a team project  Develop a survey for the evaluation of the learning material ACTIONS  Contact with professors of the Technological Educational Institute of Piraeus  Collect the needed material

DRAWBACKS  The learning material has already been scheduled from the professors  They could not let me do many presentations due to the tight time limits of the semester LAC PROJECT UPDATE  Change of the title of the project and focus on Solar Energy Systems  Creation of only one presentation  The idea of the project is canceled

FINAL ACTIONS  Creation of the presentation  Creation of a group in Facebook called “Environmental Management in Greece”  Creation of a specific mail-account for further communication  Presentation and instant evaluation of the material

STRUCTURE OF THE PRESENTATION 1.Building Activity in Greece Statistical Data Environmental effects Recycling of construction wastes in Greece compared to other countries 2.Bioclimatic Construction Advantages Criteria for applying Parameters for successful performance Technical analysis of active and passive solar heating and cooling systems

3.Study cases Vitro house Eco-House Barcelona, Spain Aloni Antiparos Island, Greece

4.SWOT Analysis for Active & Passive Solar Energy Building Systems Strengths & Weaknesses of Active Solar Systems Strengths & Weaknesses of Passive Solar Systems Opportunities & Threats of both Active & Passive Solar Systems 5.Win – Win Strategy Proposals

PRESENTATION DAY  Expected number of participants: 30 students  Number of participants: 14 students  Given time: 20 to 45 minutes EVALUATION RESULTS  The objectives were clear and provided participants with new information  The length of the presentation was not totally appropriate  Most participants enjoyed the presentation

 The material was clear and well organized  More time should be provided in order to keep a better pace in the lecture  The time spent in the presentation was worthwhile  The knowledge participants gained will improve their performance

LESSONS LEARNED!!  There are many gaps in the curriculum  It is difficult for students to combine many factors in building constructions  The speaker should be prepared for many questions  The speaker has to focus on  Each lectures presented in students should focus only in few specific points, in order to have the time to analyze them properly

FUTURE PLANS & ASPECTS  Create the actual number of lectures that are needed to cover the issues mentioned and the additional transcripts  Raise awareness in greater number of civil engineering students or others that are interested  Keep informing about national and international environmental issues (new technologies and strategies)
