 1619-Virginia House of Burgesses- 1 st Representative Government

 Long Growing Season  Hot Climate  Flat Land with fertile soil  Lots of Rivers to transport goods  All of the major Colonies along the coast

The Southern Colonies were not dominated by a single religion which gave way to more liberal attitudes and some religious freedom.

 Primarily Anglican and Baptist churches throughout all of the southern colonies  Taxes helped to support the church

 Maryland was established as a refuge for English Catholics by Cecilius Calvert, also known as Lord Baltimore.

 Mercantilism was very prevalent in the southern colonies  Plantations and Small Farms  Grew Tobacco, Rice, Indigo, Cotton  Pig Farming

Slave labor used throughout the south. Although not the large scale plantations that we think of with the Civil War.

 Abundance of land and a lack of workers led to a need for slaves  Indentured servants and slave labor became necessary for plantation owners  Slavery was legal in all the colonies by 1700

 There were no public schools, and very few private schools available.  Rich families would hire private tutors to come to the house or plantation school and teach children
