DIVISION OF YOUTH CORRECTIONS ESTABLISHING A SAFETY CULTURE

DYC POLICY 8.2 The Division of Youth Corrections (DYC) considers the safety of clients and employees and the preservation of its building and facilities as one of its primary task and concerns. Employees of DYC shall learn and follow procedures, which will create a safe environment in which to treat clients, a safe work place for staff and safe public facilities for visitors. Success of the Division’s Risk Management Program, requires each individual to act in a manner that promotes safety. Situations which are not covered by a safety rule require that good judgement be exercised to bring about a safe conclusion.

INJURY PREVENTION The goal of the Colorado Department of Human Services (CDHS) and DYC is to reduce the number of Workers Comp. claims, and dollars lost, by 10% this year.

RISK MANAGEMENT : The management process which plans, organizes, directs, and controls activities in order to reduce or eliminate the adverse effects of accidental loss. It encompasses a broad range of administrative functions and shared expertise from several agencies to reduce losses associated with employee, client or visitor injuries, property damage, and other sources of potentially liability.

SAFETY PROGRAM Designated Facility Safety Officer. Workers Comp. Coordinator Violence in the Workplace Coordinator Designated Facility Fire Marshal Facility Safety Committee: to include a representative from all work areas (i.e. Food Services, Medical, Pods, Maintenance, etc…) DYC Risk Management Oversight Committee (RMOC).

SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S JOB What can you do to prevent accidents from occurring in your work area? What should you do if you see something out of place? Who can you go to with safety concerns?

SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S JOB About 40% of accidents can be prevented by the people who work in the area. If you see something out of place (i.e. coffee spill on floor, broken chair, etc…) correct it yourself. Remember that “Safety is Everyone’s Job”.

SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S JOB If you can’t correct the problem, report the problem to the maintenance department responsible for your work area. If the problem is not necessarily a maintenance issue, fill out a “Report of Unsafe Conditions” form and submit it to your safety committee.

REPORT OF UNSAFE CONDITIONS Any employee wishing to report an unsafe or unhealthy working condition or wishing to make a recommendation pertaining to safety or improving the health of the work environment may do so by completing the Report of Unsafe Condition Form (See Policy 8.1, Safety Programs, Inspections and Fire Evacuation Plans, Addendum C). All recommendations will be reviewed by the facility Safety Committee. –.The person submitting the safety recommendation will be advised as to the action taken to remedy the condition. The employee’s right to file this report is protected by State law.

SAFETY IS EVERYONE’S JOB Be an active part of the DYC safety culture. Success of the Division’s Risk Management and Injury Prevention Program, requires each individual to act in a manner that promotes safety.
