Santa Clara County Assets by Grade

Assets = Test Scores! Recent studies in MI & CA show assets positively linked to standardized achievement tests. When we link asset levels to school records, students with more assets have a higher grade point average.

Assets & Academic Success 2,000,000 Students Nationally Nine of the 41 assets are empirically linked to academic success. These include: Individual Assets * achievement motivation * school engagement * bonding to school * reading for pleasure

Assets & Academic Success Ecological Assets: * caring school climate * parent involvement in schooling * service to others * high expectations * participation in after-school programs

“No subgroup of young people excels dramatically or lags far behind the others with developmental assets.” — All Kids Are Our Kids Anyone Have an Advantage? 2,000,000 Adolescents!

National Results by Race/Ethnicity: American Indian—17.5 assets Asian/Pacific Islander—18.9 assets African-American—18.9 assets Hispanic—16.9 assets White—19.0 assets Multiracial—18.0 assets

National Results by Gender: * Girls have an average of 19.9 assets; * Boys have an average of 17.2 assets. * Boys outrank girls in only one asset – “Safety”

Relationship of assets to risk behavior: Even though low-income youth are twice as likely to use illegal drugs, low-asset youth are 9.4 times more likely to use those same drugs.
