What is Breast Cancer? Breast cancer is a malignant tumor that starts in the cells of the breast. A malignant tumor is a group of cancer cells that can grow into (invade) surrounding tissues or spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body. The disease occurs almost entirely in women, but men can get it, too.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

Some More Info. White women are slightly more likely to develop breast cancer than African-American women. However, in women under 45, breast cancer is more common in African-American women than white women. Overall, African- American women are more likely to die of breast cancer. Asian, Hispanic, and Native- American women have a lower risk of developing and dying from breast cancer.

…& More In 2011, there were more than 2.6 million breast cancer survivors in the US. About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. For women in the U.S., breast cancer death rates are higher than those for any other cancer, besides lung cancer.

… Besides skin cancer, breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Just under 30% of cancers in women are breast cancers. A woman’s risk of breast cancer approximately doubles if she has a first-degree relative (mother, sister, daughter) who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. About 15% of women who get breast cancer have a family member diagnosed with it.

Reasons Our reasoning of having this breast cancer awareness day is because we wanted to inform all of you on what women & some men are going through every day, they are fighting for a cure and praying to be healthy. If you would like to donate to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Fund go to this website and press “Donate”

Breast Cancer Awareness Day At Rush ! Please wear anything pink tomorrow on Friday, October 26 to represent breast cancer. Today in your advisory you will be handed a pink sticky note and we kindly ask you to write some words of encouragement to people who are dealing with breast cancer. When you are done please give it back to your advisor. THANK YOU !
