Introduction Task Process Step 1: Browse boats Step 2: Study boat hulls Step 3: Research construction Step 4: Find new sources Step 5: Advantages/Disadvantages Step 6: Decisions Resources Evaluation Conclusion

Ever wondered how boats are made? What if you could learn how to build your own boat? Or even better, what if you could actually paddle a boat that you designed? But where should you start? Right Here! This Web Quest will introduce you to boat building techniques, resources, and helpful hints.

By completing this Web Quest, you will understand different styles of boat building and boat hull designs After completion, you will know enough about small boat building to determine what type of boat you would like to build and how to construct it. You will keep a journal and write a summary of your learning and decisions for construction.

Step 1: Browse boats Step 2: Study boat hulls Step 3: Research construction Step 4: Find new sources Step 5: Advantages/Disadvantages Step 6: Decisions

In this step you will go to Google Image and search for small boat designs that you like. Suggested terms to search for are:Google Image Canoe Kayak Boat build Wooden boat In your journal, sketch the top five boats that you like, give a brief description of each, and explain why you liked each one.

For the boat build you will be limited to constructing a wooden canoe or kayak. Knowing this, you must study boat designs to help narrow your choice of what to build. To begin your research, follow these links: CLC Boats Guillemot Kayaks GA Boats These links are simply a starting point, please research beyond their sources and record your findings in your journal.

In this step, you will research different construction techniques. Some of the most common include: strip built, stitch and glue, fabric over frame.strip builtstitch and gluefabric over frame If you identify any new techniques, be sure to discuss the possibilities of them with the instructor. Reminder: The given links are a starting point, please research beyond their sources and record your findings in your journal.

In this step, you will find new sources that were not used in this Web Quest You will find many helpful websites throughout this assignment and should add them to your favorites and write them down in your journal. Record new web sources and send the collection of at least 7 sources to the instructor.instructor After all sources are collected, they will be organized and posted at the class website for you to access.class website The link for the class website will be updated when it is no longer under construction.

In this step, you will compare different boat designs and construction techniques. Study the notes in your journal, print the comparison chart, and then fill it out.comparison chart Points to consider are: time to build, weight capacity, length, maneuverability, and visual appeal. Once the chart is completed, have the instructor check your work and place it in your journal.

In this step you will decide what boat design and construction you would like to pursue. Study your journal notes, comparison chart, and many of the most helpful websites found. After studying all of this information, decide what technique and design to follow. Record this in your journal and prepare for a class discussion with your peers to decide what boat will be the class project. For the discussion be prepared to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of every aspect of your boat choice.

You will be evaluated in 3 categories: Journal (30 points) Is your journal organized? Are there entries for every day of Web Quest activity? Are all required writing assignments included? Comparison Chart (30) Is the chart completed? Are there several advantages and disadvantages listed for each solution? Do your solutions follow given constraints? Class Discussion (40) Are you prepared to explain your best solution? Are you able to discuss the advantages AND disadvantages of your solution? Do you participate in discussion of other solutions?

Now that you’ve completed this Web Quest, you are ready to finalize your research and participate in class discussion to determine the design and construction technique for the class boat build. After completing discussion, we will continue in the design process and begin refining the boat solution. You should keep your journal to keep notes for the rest of the Boat Build activity. Always write down any thoughts relevant to the boat build and keep good notes for yourself. Sketches and thumbnail drawings are greatly encouraged.
