Notes MARC tag 5XX

Definition General or specialized information relating to a work.

Some notes about notes n Can come from anywhere on the item, or from an outside source n Some notes may be used with any format; some are specific to certain formats n Some notes use standard wording (LC practice); some are free- text or quoted n AACR and RDA guidelines are the same, except regarding order of notes

MARC coding and ISBD punctuation n MARC tags for notes – 5XX n Some note fields use indicators; some do not u Indicators generate labels in the PAC n Some note fields use only 1 or 2 subfields; some use many n Most notes end in a period (.); some do not use ending punctuation (tags 510, 516, 536, and 586)

Order of notes n AACR u Order of notes in a record is based on importance of information for that format, not MARC tag number n RDA u Does not prescribe an order of notes n OCLC u Records are saved with notes in order entered by the cataloger u SHARE practice: do not edit order of notes in OCLC master records n Polaris u Records are saved with notes in numerical order

MARC tag 500 (general note)—some uses n Nature, scope, or form u 500 _ _ $aCompact disc. n Edition and history u 500 _ _ $aBased on the novel by Lee Child. n Information about accompanying material u 500 _ _ $aAccompanying CD-ROM includes practice test questions. u Remember to code Accompanying matter fixed field if appropriate n Index u Use MARC tag 500 if there is an index and no bibliographical references. Combine in MARC tag 504 if bibliographic references are present (see slide 10) u Remember to code Index fixed field u 500 _ _ $aIncludes index.

MARC tag 500 (general note)—some uses (cont.) n Source of title u AACR—use when title is not taken from chief source of information u RDA—not required—title can come from any source on the item u Examples: F No title page, but there is a title on the cover, spine, and table of contents page. The cataloger chose to use the title on the cover: 500 _ _ $aTitle from cover. F No title page, but there is a title on the cover (no other titles) 500 _ _ $aCover title. F Videorecording—title is taken from the case rather than the title frames: 500 _ _ $aTitle from container.

MARC tag 500 (general note)—some uses (cont.) n Special features (videorecordings) u 500 _ _ $aSpecial features include “making of” featurette, director’s commentary, interviews with cast and crew. n Other information u Use this tag for information to be noted, but that doesn’t fit a more specific note u 500 _ _ $aIncludes discussion questions (p ).

Quoted notes n Usually (but not always) in MARC tag 500 n Transcribe exactly from the source n Enclose in quotation marks n Indicate source of note* u If quoted from chief source of information, place ending punctuation inside quotes F 500 _ _ $a“Based on a true story.” u If quoted from another source, follow quotes by two dashes, provide source of quote, and end in a period. First word of source is capitalized F 500 _ _ $a“Based on a true story”—Cover. n * SHARE best practice: Do not need to indicate source of info in MARC tag 520 (Summary note)

Some commonly used notes n 504 – Bibliography, etc. u If item also has an index, note that here instead of in MARC tag 500 u Include page numbers of bibliographical references if they are in one sequence u Code fixed fields Cont and Index as appropriate u 504 _ _ $aIncludes bibliographical references (p ) and index. n 505 – Formatted contents note u Use appropriate 1 st and 2 nd indicators u See SHARE best practice for guidance u Basic contents note F 505 0_ $aA house divided cannot stand -- A more perfect union -- Dawn of a new century -- Rolling into the fifties -- Tear down this wall -- Timeline -- Republican presidents. u Enhanced contents note F $tStudy in scarlet /$rArthur Conan Doyle --$tThe purloined letter /$rEdgar Allan Poe -- $tThe mirror crack’d from side to side /$rAgatha Christie.
