7 Current Status of Medical Education in KMU MEDC established at KMU by the year of 2003 MEDC revised to EDC by cooperation of JICA in 2005 JICA trained five groups of KMU lecturers at University of Tokyo yet, totally 36 lecturers in field of medical education. – 34 lecturer's from KMU – 2 lecturer’s from Ningarhar Medical Faculty

8 Current Status cont…. JICA has held some seminars about PBL and CBL Medical education is teacher-centered – This is the wish of Professor that he or she explains everything he or she wants and prepares the lecture notes from various sources according to his or her desire – Each professor teaches according to the curriculum of which country he or she has been trained

9 Continue…. There is no limitation between undergraduate and postgraduate curriculum. For example the same amount of Anatomy is being taught for both of them There was not coordination between departments

10 Continue.. There is no generalized principles for all departments – Just knowledge is assessed not skills and attitude – PBL and CBL have already been implemented in KMU – Undergraduate curriculum was revised – PBL committee has been established

13 Continue.. Replacement of teacher-centered method to student-centered method by implementation of new methods such as PBL, CBL and OSCE. Training excellent GPs for the better future of the society. Improving quality of health services.

14 Strategy Improvement of Undergraduate and Postgraduate education by implementation of standardized curriculum. Continuing professional development programs specially for the junior staff of KMU. Continuing Medical Education with the cooperation of ex-trainees.

18 Challenges Cooperation of senior lecturers. Participation and cooperation of ex-trainees. Financial support – Preparation of stations for OSCE – Training of simulated patients – Equipments and materials

19 Action Plan Enlist the support of the dean and other powerful advocates within the KMU Appoint a medically qualified director Demonstrate practical ways in which the department of medical education can help the KMU early on Ensure a nonthreatening and nonjudgmental approach to the KMU and faculty members

20 Continue.. Establish effective lines of reporting and communication with the KMU Employ appropriate staff – Expertise – Skills – Background Focus on the health professions’ education Create enthusiasm for teaching at KMU

21 Continue.. Obtain a guarantee of funding for a few years until self-supporting Attract financial resources Gain recognition for the development of the scholarship of education in the KMU Establish contract with other groups both nationally and internationally
