Ready to Hide Your First Geocache? One geocacher’s suggestions for high quality hides. (And some things you might want to avoid….)

Hiding a geocache Some uncomfortable lessons about: Homeland Security

Hiding a geocache Getting Started! Why hide THIS geocache HERE? Is this an appropriate place for a geocache? Is there a reason to come here?

Hiding a geocache Getting Started! Is there good cover for the cache, and can you search discretely? Is it a location that many people go to regularly? Is it where you can maintain the cache fairly easily?

Hiding a geocache Choosing a container It should be waterproof! It must be durable! It should be easy to open and secure when closed!

Hiding a geocache Choosing a container “Large” is like a five gallon can. Let your location be your guide for size! “Regular” caches average about 1 gallon. “Small” is the size of a sandwich. “Micro” is about as big as a 35mm film can. There is an “Other” category which can, among other things, be used for “Nanos”.

Hiding a geocache Something to keep in mind when hiding a geocache: There are important differences between “camouflage”, “cover”, and “concealment”. All are useful in hiding a geocache, especially in combination! “Camouflage”is disguising something so it can “hide in plain sight”. “Cover” means a physical barrier! “Concealment” means an interrupted sight-line. (Details in second presentation.)

Hiding a geocache Okay, I hid it…. Now what? For us to find it, you have to post it on most popular (There are other sites, but this is by far the most popular!) You need accurate coordinates and a good description. PLEASE include any NEEDED information in the description!

Hiding a geocache Okay, I hid it…. Now what? If you include a clue, make it specific and helpful! Determine the difficulty and terrain ratings. Give the approver enough information to understand your idea.

Hiding a geocache My cache wasn’t approved!!! So now what?

Hiding a geocache Summary PLANNING PLANNING is the most important part, in my opinion; find a good location and plan the cache carefully. ASSEMBLING ASSEMBLING the actual cache using a durable, waterproof, container. Use camouflage techniques as needed. HIDING HIDING the cache and getting good coordinates. POSTING POSTING a clear, complete, cache page.
