Countdown… StandUp!

Did You Connect With Your Coach?

Today’s Topic: Metabolism

Everyone’s metabolism naturally slows down with age!

Metabolism is the amount of energy (calories) your body burns to maintain itself. Whether you are eating, drinking, sleeping, cleaning etc... your body is constantly burning calories to keep you going. What Is Metabolism:

After age 25, we lose 5-7 Lbs of muscle every decade unless we exercise regularly  20% loss in metabolic rate each decade  Result: we get weaker and fatter! By age 30’s and 40’s, we’re not gaining in exercise and thus, burning less calories Metabolic Rate Loss With Age:

Survival Mode vs. Efficiency 1. Conserves energy 2. Retains water 3. Slows down metabolism 4. Stores body fat 5. Breaks down skeletal muscle Starvation Response What triggers Starvation Response

Survival Mode vs. Efficiency Survival How Do We Move From Survival Efficiency To Efficiency 1. Has natural energy 2. Increased metabolism 3. Reduced body fat 4. Balanced hormone levels (mood stability) 5. Lean muscle

 More calories than body needs = Gain Weight  Less calories than body needs = Lose Weight Dependent on: Weight Management Metabolism is the engine that burns these calories Total Calories Consumed -vs- Total Calories Burned

1. Build Lean Body Mass  Resistance & Weight training  Cardio Exercise  Walk  Use stairs instead of elevator Ref. “100 Ways to Burn 100 Calories” “20 EZ Ways to Burn 100 Calories” Ex. Jogging, cycling, swimming Ways To Boost Metabolism

6. Eat Small Meals  Starvation or Yoyo Diet slows metabolism  Eating smaller meals every 3-4 hours Ways To Boost Metabolism

7. Drink Green Tea 8. High Energy Foods Remember… Be patient! You did not gain your weight overnight! Ways To Boost Metabolism

9. Power on with Protein 10. Take Vitamins 11. Avoid Stress Ways To Boost Metabolism
