TV, radio and newspapers regularly report crimes and crime statistics. CollectProcessDiscuss Crime in the Media Plan

CollectProcessDiscuss Set the problem How safe is the area you live in? Are the crime figures as bad as some of the newspapers suggest? What are the crime figures like in your area? Are crime figures increasing each year? Should people be more/less concerned about certain crimes? Where in the UK is the ‘safest’ place to live? Where is the ‘crime capital’ of the UK? In which areas of the UK is crime increasing? Which places are improving?

Burglary Criminal damage D Fraud & Forgery Robbery Sexual offences Theft Violence Burglary Criminal damage Drug offences Fraud & Forgery Robbery Sexual offences Theft Violence How safe is the area you live in? Each year the Government records around five million crimes. The numbers are collected by the Police Force and by the British Crime Survey. CollectProcessDiscuss Crimes are usually sorted into eight main groups. Can you work out which groups these are? There is a ninth group containing ‘other crimes’. Eight categories Plan

people live here people live here. For us to compare these in a fair way, crimes are reported for each area… based on one thousand people. For us to compare these in a fair way, crimes are reported for each area… How safe is the area you live in? CollectDiscuss A fair comparison Some parts of the country are more heavily populated than others. This can mean big differences in the crime statistics! North Yorkshire, in 2004, recorded burglaries. South Yorkshire, in 2004, recorded burglaries = 11 burglaries per 1000 people = 6·5 burglaries per 1000 people Plan Process

How safe is the area you live in? CollectProcessDiscuss National average Plan Someone has collected some local data for four crimes: Drugs, Burglary, Vehicle Theft and Violence. Which crime do you think goes with which bar on the bar chart? Can you tell if this is a high crime area? What other data would help you to say if this is a high crime area?

Should people in your area really be worried about these crimes?

Discuss PlanCollectProcess Discussion How safe is the area you live in? If you do want to compare the questionnaire results with real crime data for your area then you need to collect some suitable data. You will need to start a new data handling cycle…
