What Is Congruence? Congruence = Matching If two shapes are congruent they match exactly in shape and in size

For Example: These two triangles are congruent They are exactly the same shape They are exactly the same size

Some More Examples: Congruent circles!Congruent stars!Congruent hearts!

Sometimes shapes are turned in a different direction, but if they have the same shape and the same size, they are congruent. All of these hearts are congruent!

Are these two shapes congruent? YES! They are the SAME size and shape!

Are these two shapes congruent? YES! Even though you have to rotate one of them, they are the SAME size and shape!

Are these shapes congruent? No! They are not the same shape, so they are not congruent!

Are these shapes congruent? No! They are not the same size, so they are not congruent!

Can you match the congruent shapes?

The others are NOT congruent – can you explain why?

Let’s try some more! Can you match the congruent shapes?

The others are NOT congruent – can you explain why?

Can you find congruence in the world around you? Exit
